PARHAM MS. LIII. SELECTED OFFICES from a Pontifical of Paris use, in Latin, viz. :-(a) Reconciliation of penitents, beginning after Compline on Wedn. in Holy Week and continued on Maundy Thursday with visits to the church of S. Magloire (f. 5), the cemetery of the Innocents (f. 11 b) and the church of S. Eloi (f.12). f. 1 ;-
(b) Mass for Maundy Thursday " ad ecclesiam Parisiensem," with the blessing of the various oils (f. 24b). f.13b;-(c)"Ad Mandatum Faciendum," on the same day. f.48;-(d)"Ad fontes benedicendos," for Sat. in Holy Week. f. 50 b ;-(e) " Incipit officium in representatione penitentium. Feria iiii in capite ieiunii," i.e. the expulsion of penitents on Ash Wednesday. f. 62 b. From the churches, etc., above mentioned the use is evidently that of Paris. Vellum; ff. iii + 78. 11 in. x 7 5/8 in. XVI cent. Executed in France (Paris). 22 lines to a page. Gatherings of 8 leaves (last 6). Sec. fol. " -albabor." With two miniatures, carefully executed in decadent French style, within full-page architectural frames : the subjects are (1) The Last Supper. f. 1 ;-(2) The Crucifixion. f. 13 b. Illuminated initials and line-endings. The whole MS. closely resembles Add. MS. 17008, another portion of a Pontifical, apparently also of Paris use. On f. 1 is a shield of arms, inserted later, of the Potier family, az. two dexter hands appaumés or, a canton checky or (a mistake for arg.) and az., surmounted by a coronet and a green episcopal hat ; these arms evidently refer either to René Potier , Count-bishop of Beauvais 1595-1616, or to his brother Augustin, bishop from 1617 to 1650.
18th cent. blue Morocco binding. On f. iii is the note " R. Curzon, 1856. Bequeathed by Mrs. Willoughby Moore." A letter of Albert Way to [Mrs. Moore ?], about the arms, 27 Jan. 1853, is inserted (f. i). Not in Curzon Cat.
