PARHAM MS. LX. " OFFICE de la Vierge": Hours of the Virgin, etc., in Latin, calligraphically written in Roman and Italic script by Nicolas Jarry (see f. 84 b : " N. Jarry Parisinus scribebat, 1659 "), " écrivain et noteur de la musique " to Louis XIV. The dates of his birth and death are uncertain, but Brunet, Manuel du Libraire, iii, 1862, col. 511, Supplément i, 1878, col. 692, gives a list of manuscripts in his hand with dates ranging between 1633 and 1665. Other MSS. in the Museum in his hand are Add. 27928, written in 1650 (with miniatures), and Add. 11359. The contents are :-
(1) " Office de la Vierge " : matins, lauds, vespers and compline of the Virgin. f. 2 ;-
(2) Vespers and compline for Sunday. f. 69 ;-
(3) " Prieres pour le Roy," i.e. Ps. xix, etc. f. 85 ;-
(4) Miserere (Ps. 1). f. 87. Vellum; ff. i + 90. 3 5/16 in. x 2 1/8 in. A.D. 1659. The pages are framed with a thin band of gold. At the beginning of the several sections there is a design of flowers at the top within the band and the large initial is in gold on a background of flowers (cf. Add. 27928). Headings and initials in gold and colours. Two miniatures in gold frames, with quatrains in French in a compartment below: Virgin and Child, quatrain beg. " O second espoir des Humains " (f. 1 b), and the Virgin, quatrain beg. " L'Artisan qui forma les Cieux "
(f. 44 b). Binding of black morocco, gilt end-papers (18th cent.). Enclosed in red velvet case. On f. 90 is the inscription " Barre," and on f. i " M.S.S. Curzon. 1832." Curzon Cat., MSS. in Modern Languages, no. 3.
