PARHAM MS. LXI. JOHANNES DIRKSZOON van Schoonhoven, Tractatus de passione, and St. Augustine, Manuale : Dutch versions with other theological pieces in Dutch.
1. Translation, in 10 chapters, of the Tractatus de passione Domini (also called the Exhortatorium spirituale) of Johannes Dirkszoon van Schoonhoven, canon regular of Groenendael, d. 1431 (for whom see J. G. R. Acquoy, Het Klooster te Windesheim, ii, p. 318, note 3). The Tractatus has not been printed, but exists in MSS. e.g. Brussels Roy. Libr. 15129, f. 167 ; 5848, f. I (Van den Gheyn, Cat. des MSS. de la Bibl. Royale, iii, 1903, pp. 322-3). Cf. also Moll in Kerkhistorisch Archief, Amsterdam, iv, p. 263. For MSS., of the Dutch version see W. de Vreese, De Handschriften van Jan van Ruusbroec's Werken, i, 1900, p. 434. An apparently independent version of the same work is in Add. MS. 11487, f. 110, headed " Hier beghint een seer deuote epistel die broeder lohannes regulier te Groenendale sende synen neue bi Wttrecht in die Cathusers oerde " (see De Vreese, op. cit., ii, p. 511). The present text (which appears to agree with that in Cologne MS. G B 8o 71, f. 59) lacks the superscription and begins with the prologue, headed " Hier begint dat prologus van dat metalen serpent," and beginning "Dat metalen serpent uit cruus te scouwen." Chap. 1, headed " Een minlike vermaninghe van den leuen ende liden ons heren Ihesu Christi. Dat. i. cap.", beg. " Christo ergo in carne passo, etc. [l Pet. iv. 1]. Alre liefste alsoe du sietste dattu natuerlic niet en leues in den water." The last chapter ends " Ick bin die alre vterste van allen mannen." f. 1.
2. Translation of two excerpts from Pseudo-Bonaventura's Stimulus Amoris (ed. Peltier, Opera Bonaventurae, 1868, xii, p. 632), viz. ;-
[pt. i, cap. 7 in Peltier's ed.]," beg. " In deser eersamigher passien ons heren Ihesu Christi." f. 86. In the Cologne MS. (see art. 1 above) the Tractatus is also followed by a version of an excerpt from the Stimulus Amoris (ii. 2).
