Reichling, Das Doctrinale des Alexander de Villa-Dei, 1893, in the series Monumenta germaniae Paedagogica, Bd. xii. The text is in the original form, without the interpolations of Johannes de Garlandia found in Arundel MS. 394, etc. (cf. Reichling, p. liii). There are a few glosses in different hands, mostly on the earlier pages, partly in Latin, partly in Italian. Begins "Scribere clericulis paro doctrinale nouellis." The scribe has used l. 2642 as a colophon (in red) " Doctrinale dei virtute iuuante peregi." f. 1. II. Fragments from bindings of MSS. of Italian provenance; llth- 14th centt.
(1) Mutilated fragment of a leaf of a biblical MS. of considerable size, written in two columns, containing parts of 2 Thess. ii. 14-iii.
10 ; the end of the capitula to 1 Tim. and the prologue " Timotheum instruit " (as in Royal MS. 1 A. ii and Add. MS. 39629), and parts
of 1 Tim. i. 1-7; i. 17-ii. 9; iii. 7-iv. 3. Decorative initial (outline) on f. 61 b. llth cent. 9 in. x 9 in. f. 61.
(2) Fragment of Cicero, De Officiis, i. 92, " inde augeatur ratione "- 109, " fraudis inimici " (Teubner ed.), the paragraphs being numbered here [cxl]-clviiii. Two cols. 13th cent. 8 3/4 in. x 6 1/8 in. (mutilated at top). f. 63.
(3) St. Bonaventura, Vita Sancti Francisci, cap. iii, " hoc uiro fore complendam " - cap. iv, " tanquam ueri Israelite " (Quaracchi ed., viii, pp. 512, col. 2-513, col. 2). Two cols. l4th cent. 8 11/16 in. x 6 in. (mutilated at side with loss of text). f. 64.
(4) Two leaves of a theological treatise in two cols. The first words of the first leaf (f. 65, col. 3) are " Ad equales concordian." 14th cent. The measurement of the second leaf (the first being mutilated at side) is about 6 in. x 4 1/2 in. f. 65.
(5) Fragments of offices for the vigil of St. Cecilia, St. Columbanus, and St. Clement, from the Proprium Sanctorum of a Missal. llth cent. f. 66.
(6) Two incomplete discourses :- (a) on charity, with the text " Ante autem omnia mutuam in uobismetipsis caritatem habentes " (1 Pet. i v. 8). f. 67 (reversed) ;- (b) on the desolate state of the diocese of Camerino, " quia qui debent episcopo et ecclesie Camerinensi gerere aliquam reuerentiam et honorem non plene faciunt," with text " Quis in uobis est derelictus qui uidit domum istam in gloria sua (Haggai ii. 4). The name of the diocese has been erased in two places. Camerino suffered much in the second half of the 13th cent. from the struggle between Guelf and Ghibelline, see G. Cappelletti, Le Chiese d'Italia, iv, 1836, pp. 267-277. 13th-14th cent.

(7) Two inconsecutive leaves from a MS. of homilies. The first sermon of which the opening is preserved is on the text" Amen dico tibi, hodie mecum eris in paradiso " (Luke xxiii. 43) and beg. " Sicut dicit sapiens secundum materiam exquirendum sunt sermones." At the end are two short pieces added in later hands :-- (a) " Miraculum quomodo dyabolus non recordatur de peccato post confessionem," beg. " Fertur quod quidam iudeus inuenit in uia quemplum cristianum pauperem " : exemplum on confession. A similar exemplum occurs in a 15th cent. collection of religious tales from northern Italy, Add. MS. 27336, f. 37 (cf. Ward and Herbert, Cat. of Romances, iii, p. 659) ;-- (b) Brief tract on the Egyptian days (for which see R. Steele, Dies Aegyptiaci, reprinted from the Proc. of the Royal Soc. of Medicine, 1919, xiii, Section of the History of Medicine, pp. 108-121). The beginning is damaged, the first legible words
being " in quo si aliquis ceperit infirmari non euadet." 14th cent. f. 68. Vellum; ff. i + 69. 9 1/4 in. x 6 1/2 in. (art. I). XIII (art. II XI-XIV) cent. Written (art. I) in Italy, in two hands. Initials in black, white and red on ff. 1, 34 b, and red initials throughout. Gatherings of 10 leaves, with catchwords. See. fol. " Versibus hiis." Inscription on f. i b : " Pater Clemens de Farnesio in Conuentu Araceli Romae dono dedit D. D. Onorab. Roberto Curson," and a statement below by Curzon dating the gift in February 1833. Italian binding of boards covered with decorative paper, leather back and corner-pieces. Curzon Cat., MSS. in Latin, no. 17.
