MISSAL, of Hereford use. Contents :
-(1) Calendar. The redletter saints include Ethelbert, King and Martyr (20 May, with octave), and Thomas [de Cantilupe, Bishop] of Hereford (2 Oct.). At 11 May is an erased entry in red, " [Dedicatio ecclesie] Herford'," cf. Missale ad usum Hereford. (ed. W. G. Henderson, 1871), p. xxv, and The Hereford Breviary (ed. W. H. Frere and L. E. G. Brown, Henry Bradshaw Soc., 1904-15), i, p. xvii. The " Depositio " of St. Thomas of Hereford (25 Aug.) is omitted, and his Translation (25 Oct. [1348, see The Hereford Breviary, iii, p. xlv]) is inserted in a later (14th cent.) hand. For a full collation see op. cit., iii, pp. 253-263. f. 2 ;-
-(2) " Exorcismus salis " (et aque). f. 8 ;-
-(3) " In festo purificationis flat benedictio luminis hoc modo." f. 8 b ;-
-(4) Lists of feasts " omnino ferianda," " ferianda preterquam in caruc'," and " ferianda ab operibus mulierum," printed op. cit., iii, p. 251, from this MS. f. 8 b ;-
-(5) Chants for " Gloria in excelsis Deo " and " Ite missa est." f. 9 ;-
-(6) Temporale ; imperf., wanting single leaves after ff. 31, 32, 49, 92, 94, 98, and probably two whole quires (containing most of Holy Saturday, the whole of the Prefaces, Ordinary, and Canon, and part of the Conclusio Missae) after f. 88. The text differs considerably from that of the printed edition, most of the sequences being omitted, and many of the secrets, postcommunions, etc., being different. f. 10 ;-
-(7) Sanctorale, including Ethelbert (f. 134.b) and Thomas de Cantilupe (f. 152 b). Among the variations from the printed ed. are the omission (ff. 148, 155, 156 b) of the " Depositio " and Translation of St. Thomas of Hereford, and of All Souls. St. Alban is omitted in the text (f. 136 b), but is supplied in the margin by another hand. As in the Hereford Breviary, ii, p. 244, the Feast of Relics follows the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr (f. 140 b). f. 125 ;-
-(8) Commune Sanctorum. f. 159 ;-
-(9) Missae Votivae, including, (f. 173) " Feria iiia, de sancto Ethelberto." Imperf. at end. f. 172 ;-
-(10) Commemorations, including (f. 181 b) a Mass for the discovery of the relics of St. Ethelbert, regarded by the Rev. E. S. Dewick
(Transactions of the St. Paul's Ecclesiological Soc., iv, 1900, p. 236) as showing that the MS. was probably " in use in the cathedral church" together with (f. 182) the " Gloria in excelsis " farced for use "in festis beate Marie." A 15th cent. addition. f. 180. On the fly-leaves (ff. 1 b, 184 b) are prayers, etc., in various 15th cent. hands including (f. 184 b) a commemoration of St. Ethelbert. Vellum ; ff. vi + 184. 13 in. x 8 3/4 in. XIV cent. (before 1348 ? See artt. 1, 7). Gatherings (beg. f.2) of 12 leaves (i8, iii10, iv wants 2 leaves, v wants 1 leaf, two quires, probably, lost after viii, ix wants 2 leaves, x wants 1 leaf, xvi10, a quire lost after xvi; last6, wants 1 leaf), with catchwords. Music on four-lined stave. Flourished initials in blue, red, and purple; large decorative initials in blue, red, black, white, and purple, enclosing foliage-scrolls and occasional grotesques, at the principal feasts. Blue morocco binding by Rivière (19th cent.). Belonged probably to Hereford Cathedral (see art. 10 above) ; afterwards to Thomas Berington, of Winsley, co. Heref., at the sale of whose effects, circ. 1820-30, it was bought by Charles Blount, of Bournemouth (see f. v, letter from Dr. W. H. Frere, Bishop of Truro, quoting Blount's letter of 24 Mar. 1882).
