PONTIFICAL of Mende use, compiled by Gulielmus [Durandus], Bishop [1285-1296] of Mende, in the province of Bourges, author of the Rationale Divinorum Officiorum, etc. : see below, art. 1 (e), (f), (l), art. 3 (q), art. 4, colophon ; also Hist. Litt. de la France, xx (1842), p. 489. See also J. Catalano, Pontificale Romanum Clementis VIII et Urbani VIII (Paris, 1850-1852), who gives, in notes, etc., a collation of a 15th cent. MS. of the Durandus recension (Vat. lat. 4744). After the table of contents (f. 1), imperf. at beg., the MS. contains:-

Vellum; ff. v + 225. 11 5/8 in. x 9 1/2 in. Early XIV cent. Gatherings of 12 leaves (i wants lst leaf, last 10), remains of catchwords on ff. 95b, 155b. Margins cropped. Historiated initials, illustrating the various ceremonies, with partial borders, neatly executed in S. French style, but mostly injured by damp, and the borders mutilated. Flourished initials in blue and red. On f. 97b is a 15th cent. inscription, " Io. Warionni clericus Virdunensis." On ff. iii, iv b are pencilled notes by the Rev. E. S. Dewick, on the contents of this MS. and an Elne Pontifical in Paris (Bibl. Nat. lat. 957). Bound in dark blue morocco, gilt-tooled (circ. 1900).
