GRADUAL of the Premonstratensian abbey of St. Mary de Parco, near Louvain, written for Simon de Lovanio, Prior (see colophon on f. 227, quoted below). Contents:-
(1) Temporale, omitting Low Sunday (f. 83), Corpus Christi (f. 100b), and the last two Sundays after Pentecost f. 116 b). f. 1 ;
(2) Sanctorale, St. Lucy (Dec. 13)- St. Nicholas (Dec. 6) ; including St. Francis (f. 134) and " Elizabeth lantgrauie" [Elizabeth of Hungary, d. 1231, can. 1235] (f. 131 b). Many marginal insertions of various dates, including SS. Norbert [founder of the Premonstratensian Order., d. 1134, can. 1582] (f. 124), Dominic (f. 128 b), and Louis, King of France (f. 131 b). f. 117 ;-
(3) Commune Sanctorum : introits, followed by graduals (f. 143), alleluias (f. 150 b), offertories (f. 155), and communions (f. 158). f. 136 ;-
(4) " In dedicatione ecclesie," " De s. Maria " (f. 164), and " Pro fidelibus defunctis " (f. 165 b). f. 162 ;-
(5) Musical settings of Kyrie, Gloria in excelsis, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei for the various kinds of feasts. f. 167 ;-
(6) Sequences for the principal feasts from Christmas to St. Nicholas (Dec. 6), also (f. 213 b) " De apostolis," " De quouis sancto," etc. The former series includes (f. 186 b) " In dedicatione ecclesie " (sc. of Prémontré, May 4), the latter " De s. Seruacio " (f. 218). f. 175 ;-

(10) Alleluia " in vigilia Natalis domini cum in dominicam inciderit," followed by the colophon : " Explicit Graduale dominorum de Parcho quod fecit scribi frater Symon de Louanio prior in honore gloriose virginis Marie. Si quis abstulerit anathema sit fiat fiat."' f. 227. Simon of Louvain occurs as prior in 1257 and 1263, d. 6 Oct. 1271 : see R. van Waefelghem, Le Nécrologe de l'abbaye du Parc, p. 410 (in Analectes de l'Ordre de Prémontré, June 1907). He was not appointed before 1255 (ib., p. 89), and was no longer prior in Aug. 1266 (L. de Pape, Summaria Cronologia eccl. Parchensis, 1662, p. 125). A fine Bible was executed for the abbey library by his order in 1263 (F. J. Raymaekers, " Recherches historiques sur l'ancienne abbaye de Pare," in Revue Catholique, xvi, p. 413). Later additions (13th-15th centt.) are as follows :- (i) Sequence for St. Nichasius, beg. " Resonemus cordis cordis uocis lira non discordis " (not in Chevalier, Repert. Hymnol., nor in Dreves, Analecta Hymnica) : f. 227 b;- (ii) Trope, beg. " Mortis dyra ferens " (Chev. 29708). f. 228;- (iii) Hymn [to St. Anne ?] beg, " [A]nte thronum Trinitatis" (ib. 1180). f. 228 b;- (iv) Anthem " Regina celi letare " (ib. 17170). f. 228 b;- (v) Masses of the Arma Christi, " in festo Sacrament[i]," of the Visitation (with vigil and octave), and " pro mortalitate." f. 229 ;-(vi) "Alma redemptoris mater quem de celis " and " Regina celi letare (Chev. 862, 17170). f. 231;- (vii) Missa de Compassione (?) B.M.V., with farced Gloria in excelsis. Imperf. at beg. and end. f. 235;-
(viii) Sequences " Uirgini Marie laudes " and " Laus gloria virtus," in honour of the Virgin and St. John Evang. (Chev. 21656, 10515). ff. 236, 236 b ;-(ix) Musical settings of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei. f. 237. Vellum; ff. x + 237. 14 1/4 in. x 10 1/2 in. A.D. 1255-1266, with later additions. Gatherings of 8 leaves (xv4 ending the Temporale, xxix6, last4 wanting the first leaf). 10 lines of text, with music on four-line stave, to a page (11 lines on some of the later pages). Sec. fol. " Populus syon." Large illuminated initial, with barborder prolongations, on f. 1, enclosing miniatures of the Virgin and Child crowning a monk, and of the celebrant offering his soul to God (deacon with flabellum and subdeacon with paten standing behind him) ; smaller historiated initials on ff. 10 (Nativity), 77 (Resurrection), 93 (Ascension), 96 (Pentecost), and 162 (Dedication of church) ; decorative initials on ff. 117, 117 b, 125, 130, and 164. Headings in red, initials in red and blue, the larger ones flourished. Bound in calf, with the Parc Abbey arms stamped in gilt on the covers (press-mark " I. theca xii," f. i). Belonged to John Peckham of Slough (sale-cat., Wise, Oxford, 5-9 May 1831, lot 373) ; afterwards to Phillip Bliss (sale-cat., Sotheby's, 21 Aug. 1858, lot 124), and T. C. Archer (letter to him from W[illiam] H[enry] Monk, the composer, 12 Oct. 1859, f. iv; Puttick and Simpson's sale-cat., 25-27 June 1890, lot 698). In a letter to E. S. Dewick, dated 4 July 1890 (f. vii), W[illiam] H[enry] James Weale says that he has extracted two proses (SS. Servais and Nicasius, ff. 218, 227 b) for his Analecta Liturgica, but he does not appear to have published them.
