MISSAL of the Cistercian Abbey of St. Mary at Morimondo, in the diocese of Milan. Contents :-
1. Temporale. As in the Missale ad vsum Cisterc. (Paris, 1515), the feasts in the octave of Christmas are transferred to the Sanctorale, and there are no sequences. Ash Wednesday, Corpus Christi, and the special Holy Week rites are omitted. f. 2.
2. Prefaces, etc. (the " Credo in unum Deum " has the heading " Symbolum apostolorum," f. 56). After the Sanctus (f. 56 b) the scribe names himself: " Ego magister Jacobus de Marliano feci hunc messalem." f. 54.
3. Canon Missae. f. 57b.
4. Sanctorale, Stephen-Thomas [Dec. 26-Dec. 21], including (f. 79) Louis [King of France, d. 1270, can. 1297]; Crown of Thorns (cf. Missale ad vs. Cisterc., p.cviii), inserted by a later hand on ff. 76 b-77, in a blank space after St. Laurence. f. 59.
5. Commune sanctorum. f. 88 b.
6. Missae votivae, etc. At the end (f. 113): " MoCCCoIIo scriptus fuit iste liber, qui est sancte Marie Morimundensis, Mediolani diocesis, Cysterciensis ordinis " (in a different hand from the text), and below this the scribe's rubrics " Missale sancte Marie Morimundi," and " Ego magister Jacobus de Marliano scripsi hoe opus." f. 97. Mass for Corpus Christi (" in solemnitate consecrationis heucaristie") added by later hands on ff. 113 b, 114. Vellum; ff. ii + 115. 11 7/8 in. x 8 1/4 in. A.D. 1302, written for Morimondo Abbey by Mag. Jacobus de Marliano (see above, artt. 2, 6). Gatherings of 8 leaves (last9), with catchwords. The vellum flyleaves (ff. 1, 115) are from a 14th cent. service-book, probably an Ambrosian Missal (see note by E. S. Dewick on f. i). Half-page miniature of the Crucifixion on f. 56 b, and illuminated initials on ff. 2, 7, 59, 56 b, 57 b (first three historiated), somewhat crudely executed by Italian illuminators ; initials in red and blue throughout. Maroon morocco binding, with gilt-tooled edging (19th cent.).
