PONTIFICAL of Roman use, written, in 1325, for Ugolino Rossi, Bishop [1323-1377] of Parma (see the colophon on f. 171, quoted below). Contents:-
(1) Rubrics containing directions for ordination, beg. " Qvando episcopus ordinationem facere disposuit." f. 1 ;- (2) " Ordo septem ecclesiasticorum graduum et in gradibus ordinandi, sed ante omnia ad clericum faciendi" (sic). First tonsure, including at the end (f. 5) a prayer " Ad barbam tondendam." f. 4;- (3) "De officio cantoris siue psalmiste." f. 5b;-

Vaticanae, pp. 518, 520, 521 ; Add. 33377, f. 230 b) this benediction "non est in ordinario pape." Followed (f. 69 b) by a benediction " Super crucem eius, qui iturus est Ierosolimam," the prayer being headed " Oratio que non est in papali ordinario." f. 69 ;- (15) " Benedictio lapidis primarii pro ecelesia hedificanda," preceded by " Benedictio lapidis primari (sic), que non est in ordinario papali." f. 70 ;-

On f. 171 is the colophon : " Explicit pontificale siue ordinarium uenerabilis patris et domini domni Hugonis de Rubeis, dei et apostolice sedis gratia episcopi mrensis, secundum consuetudinem Romane ecclesie. Actum sub M.CCC.XXV. die secundo Iulii. Deo gratias. amen." A contemporary list of the contents is on f. 175 b. Additions and alterations have been made in several later (15th cent.?) hands. Vellum ; ff. iii + 176 (ff. 172-174 blank). 12 1/8 in. x 9 in. Written, in Italy (Parma ?), A.D. 1325. Gatherings of 10 leaves (v and viii want 2 leaves each, xiii wants 1 leaf, last uncertain). Cropping has practically obliterated the catchwords (cf. ff. 20 b, 40 b) and has frequently injured the contemporary foliation. Historiated initials, illustrating the various ceremonies, and illuminated initials, with partial borders, in Italian style. Flourished initials in red and blue. Music on four-line stave. Modern (Italian, 19th cent. ?) stamped binding of light brown calf. Sold at Sotheby's, 2 Dec. 1874, lot 236. Bookplate of arms of Henry White, F.S.A. (sale-cat., 30 April 1902, lot 1733).
