Vellum; ff. ix + 109 (f. 108 blank). 8 1/8 in. x 5 1/2 in. xv cent. Gatherings chiefly of 8 leaves (i6, ii6, iii + 1, ix6, vi and xi uncertain; a leaf is wanting in xi after f. 80),usually with catchwords. Twentynine (originally, no doubt, thirty) miniatures of inferior quality in French style, with full borders of foliage-scrolls, flowers and fruit ; illuminated initials and partial borders throughout. The subjects
of the miniatures are:- Agony in the Garden (f. 13b), Betrayal (f. 27), Christ before Pilate (f. 35b), Scourging (f. 39b), Christ bearing the Cross (f. 43b), Crucifixion (f. 47b), Deposition (f. 51), Entombment (f. 57), Virgin and Child appearing to Isaiah (f. 60 b), Annunciation (f. 67 b), Holy Trinity and saints whose memorials are noted above, except St. Anne (ff. 72 b-85 b), Visitation (f. 89 b), St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland (f. 93 b), St. Bernard (f. 95 b), St. Ninian (f. 97), St. Sebastian, in civilian attire (f. 100). The miniatures on ff. 78 b, 93 b, 97, 100 are reproduced by Dewick, op. cit. Original binding of wooden boards covered with brown leather stamped on each cover with two impressions of a rectangular panel. In the centre of the panel is a vertical strip divided by diagonal lines into three lozenges and two half-lozenges containing trefoils, the marginal triangles being filled with beasts. Around this are three borders : (a) inner border, 16 fleurs-de-lys in squares ; (b) middle border, 24 birds within circles ; (c) outer border, 40 wiverns within triangles. The prominence of St. Andrew's position amongst the memorials, the two devotions in honour of St. Margaret, and the office of St. Ninian, combined with the occurrence of the phrases " famulam tuam Mariam " and " michi Marie indigne famule tue" in the prayers on ff. 91, 96 b, led Dewick to conclude that the MS. was executed for a Scottish lady named Mary. He has also suggested that the two devotions to St. Sebastian (with the unusual treatment of the subject in the miniature preceding the latter of them) and the presence in the calendar, in red (Nov. 20), of St. Edmund k.m. (the only English saint except St. Thomas of Canterbury) may perhaps indicate that the donor was concerned with archery and may even have been an Archer of the Scottish body-guard of the Kings of France. From the Bourges festivals in the calendar Dewick inferred that the scribe used an archetype connected with that place ; but it is not impossible that the MS. was executed there, for a number of Scottish families were settled at Bourges at this period, and a MS. written and illuminated in the city for one of them, though at a later date (early 16th cent.), the Monypenny Breviary, is now at the Victoria and Albert Museum (for description and remarks on the Scots at Bourges, see A. Van de Put in Proc. of Soc. of Antiquaries of Scotland, vi (1922), pp. 72-114). The MS. was in Scotland in the 16th cent. : on f. 1 (cf. also f. ii b) is the inscription " This buik pertenis to ye honorable Elizabeth Danielstoun ladie of Clarkingtoun, 1577 " (correspondence respecting the identity of this lady is on ff. iii-viii). Purchased by Rev. E. S. Dewick at the sale (Hodgson's sale-cat., 22 Mar. 1911, lot 81) of a portion of the library of James Round, of Birch Hall, near Colchester.
