AUTOGRAPH LETTERS from the Alfred Morrison collection. Vol. IV. (For the preceding volumes see above, 39672, 39673, 39757.) The contents are as follows :-
1. Memoir of Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, giving an account of the battle of Auerstädt (14 Oct. 1806) and the retreat which followed ; ff. 2-12, line 20, are in the hand of an amanuensis, with autograph corrections, and ff. 12, 1. 21-15 b are entirely autograph. This appears to be an earlier draft of the dispatch of which the first three portions, dated 31 Mar. 1808, are printed in 1806 : Das Preussische Offizierkorps und die Untersuchung der Kriegsereignisse, Berlin, 1906, p. 127 ; it agrees substantially with the printed version, but differs in small details. The last portion of the dispatch, which includes the autograph passages, is not printed in the above work. Germ. Lot 2172. f. 2.
2. Letter from Friedrich von Gentz to Frederick William II, King of Prussia, relating to his translation of Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France ; 23 Dec. 1792. Germ. Holograph. Lot 2317. f. 17.
3. Eight letters from Lord George [Sackville-] Germain [lst Viscount Sackville, 1782] to Sir William Hamilton, 17 Nov. 1769-9 Sept. 1779. Holograph. Lot 2321. f. 20.
4. Note by [Jean Antoine] Houdon, the sculptor, 26 Mar. 1823. Fr. Holograph. Lot 2369. f. 38.
5. Fragment of a note-book of Lucy Hutchinson (daughter of Sir A. Apsley and widow of Colonel John Hutchinson, M.P., Governor of Nottingham, d. 1664), the greater part of which is Add. MS. 25901. This fragment contains the dialogue printed in the Memoirs, ed. Rev. Julius Hutchinson, 1806, p. 82 (see also the revised edition by C. H. Firth, 1906, introduction, p. x), and belongs to the opening portion of Add. 25901; some intervening leaves are, however, missing, corresponding to pp. 100-109 of the printed Memoirs, 1806. Autograph. A covering letter from Charlotte Jones to Mrs. Anne D. B. Montagu, 26 June 1824, with a note on the back by the latter. Lot 2375. f. 42.
6. Letter from Marshal [James Francis Edward] Keith, to " Mon Cher Comte," giving an account of the battle of Rossbach. Dated Chemnitz, 30 Dec. 1757. Fr. Holograph. Lot 2397. f. 49.
7. (a) Letter from [Philippe de Mornay, Seigneur] du Plessis [-Marly] to his wife, partly in cipher, 6 Feb. 1598. Fr. Holograph. Printed in Mémoires et Correspondance de Duplessis Mornay, viii, p. 19, Paris 1824. f. 52 ;-
-(b) The same to the same, partly in cipher, 12 Feb. 1598. Fr. Holograph. Printed op. cit. viii, p. 55. f. 54;-
-(c) The same to the same, 2 Mar. 1598. Fr. Holograph. Printed op. cit. viii, p. 116. f. 57 ;-
-(d) Letter from Charlotte Arbaleste, wife of Philippe de Mornay, Seigneur du Plessis-Marly, to Estienne Crochet, requesting him to pay the sum of sixty crowns to Noel Fremont, 19 May 1600. Fr. Signed. On the verso is a notarial certificate of the receipt of sixty crowns by Noel Fremont from Estienne Crochet, 4 Oct. 1600. Fr. f. 60;-
-(e) Two letters from [Robert le Maçon] de la Fontaine, minister of the Huguenot church in London, 1574- 1611, to Philippe de Mornay, Seigneur du Plessis-Marly ; dat. London, 24 Feb. 1604. Fr. Holograph. ff. 62, 64;-
-(f) Draft of Philippe de Mornay's answer to the above, dat. Saumur, 26 Mar. 1604. Fr. Autograph. The letter of which this is a draft is printed in Mémoires, etc. ix. p. 538 ; certain passages in the draft do not occur in the letter (e.g. that on f. 69), and the printed letter is dated London instead of Saumur, perhaps by a printer's error. f. 65. Lots 2497.
8. Twenty letters of Admiral George Brydges Rodney, lst Baron Rodney, nineteen of which are to his second wife Henrietta, 1778- 1782, all except two being printed, with considerable alterations in the wording, in G.
