LETTERS to Sir William Hamilton, K.B., Envoy at Naples, from British diplomatists serving in Italy, with occasional holograph drafts of his replies (ff. 106, 120, 143, 147, 217, 231, 255, 275) ; 11 Sept. 1778-27 Feb. 1800. The writers are :-

(a) John Udny, Consul at Leghorn, relating chiefly to the operations of the British and French fleets in the Mediterranean, 19 Mar. 1780-5 Mar. 1798. ff. 6-93;-

(b) Francis Drake, Minister at Genoa and Milan, and (Sept. 1795-May 1796) commissioner with the Austrian army in Italy, largely concerning the campaign against Bonaparte and Salicetti, 6 Oct. 1793-27 Oct. 1796. ff. 95-197 ;-

(c) Hon. William Frederick Wyndham, Envoy and (1800) Minister to Tuscany, with military news and suggestions for checking the French successes, 30 Mar. 1794-27 Feb. 1800. ff. 200-364. Letters in cypher (sometimes decyphered) occur at ff. 116 b, 120, 179, 235, 257, 276, 295. At the beginning are:- the decypher of a letter to Hamilton from [Thomas Thynne, 3rd Viscount] Weymouth, 11 Sept. 1778 (f. 1) ; a letter from Udny to Sir Horace Mann, 4 Jan. 1779 (f. 4). A number of enclosures, chiefly copies, are interspersed throughout the volume; the names of the writers will be found in the Index. Other correspondence of Sir W.
