TRESHAM PAPERS. Vol. IV (ff. 74). Papers relating to Sir Thomas Tresham's buildings, etc., at Rothwell, Rushton, Lyveden, all in co. Northt., and Ely. For an account of his activities as a builder see J. A. Gotch, The Buildings of Sir Thomas Tresham, 1883.
1. " A Note of a Bargayne for certaine worckes to be doone at Rothwell Crosse by W. Grombalde " : agreement between Sir Thomas Tresham and William Grombold for the building of the Market-House, Rothwell, dated 2 July 1578, and signed by both parties. With draft. Printed in H.M.C.R., p. xxxiv. f. 1.
2. Plans of the Hawkfield Lodge, Rushton, of which no remains survive; [?1596]. For accompts connected with the building of this lodge in 1596-7 see Add. MS. 39832, ff. 77 sqq. The initials "R.S." occur on the first plan. Reproduced, H.M.C.R., pp. lxiii-lxvii. f. 3.
3. " Memorandums concerninge 2 peces of paynted worke at Eely in parte of ye gallery chamber wyndow ther; 15 Julii 1597 " : notes on the proposed decoration of a window in Bishop Goodrich's gallery in the Bishop's Palace at Ely. The " garnishinge of yt wyndow wth depaynted devyses " was intended partly as an amplification of " reverend bishop Allcokkes devyse uppon ye nativytye of Christe." John Alcock Bishop of Ely, 1486-1500, began the building of the Bishop's Palace. For the character of the notes cf. H.M.C.R., pp. xix, xlii. They are followed by a miscellaneous collection of disconnected jottings bearing on the same subjects, some of which appear to relate to texts found on Lyveden New Building. f. 5.
