Scope & Content:

Collection of royal letters, dating from between 1566 and 1704, formerly owned by John Strype (1643–1737), historian and biographer. With several transcripts by Strype.

ff. 2r-3v: Notes by John Strype. On letters from sovereigns, with other papers, partly from the collection of Sir Michael Hickes.

f. 4r-4v: Notes of manuscripts belonging to John Strype.

ff. 5r-8v: Notes on letters and dispatches during the reign of King James I.

ff. 9r-10v: Letter from Queen Elizabeth I to Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Deputy of Ireland. Concerning a quarrel between Thomas Butler, 10th Earl of Ormond and James FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond. 1566. Endorsed in the hand of William Cecil, Baron Burghley.

ff. 11r-12r: Letter from Edward Norgate to Sir Abraham Williams. Describing the inauguration of a new academy at Breda, founded by the Prince of Orange. 22 September 1646.

f. 12v: Letter from King James I to King Philip IV of Spain. Theobalds, 3 April 1623.

ff. 13r-17v: Copies of two letters from Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Earl of Clarendon, to the Duke and Duchess of York. On the subject of his daughter changing her religion. No dates.

f. 30r-30v: Copy of a letter from William Cecil, Baron Burghley, to Princess Elizabeth, before her accession to the crown. On the discharge of one Mrs Ashley and the appointment of the Lady Tirwhit in her place. No date.

ff. 80r-82v: Two letters from Ernest, Duke of Saxe-Erbe, to Queen Anne. Reporting the birth of a son, christened Anne in honour of the Queen, and sending news of the death of the Duchess in child-bed. 5 and 16 October 1702. Latin.
