TOWNSHEND PAPERS. Vol. I (ff. 123, in two parts:- A, ff. 1-7, 10-123; B, ff. 8-9). Personal papers, mostly of or relating to Lord Townshend; 1697-1898. Included are letters, etc., relating to the Battle of Quebec and its aftermath, 1759 (ff. 8b-43b) and to Lord Townshend's creation as Marquess, 1787 (ff. 58-80b). At f. 1 is an unsigned letter from Matthew Prior to Charles, 2nd Viscount Townshend, dated The Hague, 5 Nov. 1697, N.S., printed from another source in H.M.C., Manuscripts of the Marquess of Bath, iii (Prior Papers), 1908, p. 185. Also included (ff. 8b-9) is a 'Plan of the Town of Quebeck in Canada Enlarged from [Jacques Nicolas] Bellin's Plan with Additions', circa 1759. Scale 400 ft. to 1 in. [1:4800]. West at top. Partly coloured. 475 x 375mm. A key distinguishes the 'Additions not expressed in the Original Plan'. Notes include one stating that the 'original Plan . . . appears to have been taken about the year 1740'. Accompanied the original reconnaissance report, compiled by Col.
