CALVOCORESSI COLLECTION. Vol. I (ff. ii+1). Béla Bartók: Thirteen Hungarian folksongs, beg. `Kemény kösziklának'; aft. 1914. Hungarian. Autograph. Words traditional. Single leaf, in ink, annotated, in pencil, (f. 1) `2. Beilage'. Possibly relates to the preliminary materials for Bartók's book, A Magyar Népdal, 1924, translated into English by Calvocoressi as Hungarian Folk Music, 1931. For the history of this work, see the preface, pp. 8*-10*, to the facsimile edition of the German translation, 1925, Ethnomusikologische Schriften Faksimile-Nachdrucke, I, Das Ungarische Volkslied, ed. D. Dille, Budapest, 1965, and D. Révész, ed., Bartók Béla írásai, v: A Magyar népdal (Budapest, 1990), pp. 299-310. The thirteen songs are nos. 2-4, 7a, 7b, 10, 11b, 15, 16, 19-22 in section A.I of the music examples in these editions. The information given above each song includes references to phonogram records, roman numbers indicating dialect regions, place and date of collection, and an initial indicating the collector: `B' = Bartók; `K' = Kodály; `V' = Vikár; `L' = Lajtha. See Calvocoressi, p. 196. Sent to Calvocoressi on 18 March 1923: see A. Gombocz and L. Somfai, ‘Bartók’s Briefe an Calvocoressi (1914-1930)’, Studia Musicologica, xxiv (1982), pp. 199-231.
