PERCY GRAINGER MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. V (ff. 18). Settings of poems from Barrack-Room Ballads and Other Verses, 1892.
1. ff. 1-10b. 'Soldier, Soldier', beg. 'Soldier, soldier come from the wars'. Composed for voice and piano, 1898. Published by Schott 1925 as Kipling Setting nr. 13, with optional harmonium accompaniment:-
(a) Second setting, for voice and piano; 'Feb. 21st-23rd 1899' (f. 1b). Ink MS. annotated on both folios in red '1st setting of "Soldier, soldier"', but see Dreyfus 1980, pp. 24-5, and fair copy in Grainger Museum MG 3/102-9-8 which suggest that this is the second setting. The same setting for the first and last verses, followed by a setting for the refrain and one for other verses, the last with two alternative endings. ff. 1-1b;- (b) Bifolium bearing title for score with an Amsterdam address in ink and 'Kipling settings nr. 13' in pencil. Different paper from ff. 3-9 below for which it may have served as a wrapper during the Amsterdam rehearsals in 1922 (Dreyfus 1980,
p. 27). f. 2;- (c) Third setting for six solo voices and five-part mixed chorus. 'Composed at Troldhaugen, Hop, Norway 2.8.07. Scored 18.4.08 (31a Kings Rd)' (f. 9) [not 1 Mar. as in printed version]. Draft score in ink developed from the Troldhaugen sketches (Grainger Museum MG 15/4-17-10: 1 and 2), but transposed down a semitone (Dreyfus 1980, p. 26). Verses (1, 7, 8 only) and refrain written on separate systems, the latter in red ink. Preceded (ff. 4-5) by words in full in another hand and (f. 6) by accompanying men's solo part B labelled 'Mr Sem Dresden' apparently prepared for Amsterdam rehearsals of 1922. ff. 3-9;- (d) Harmonium part (pp. 3 and 4 only) consisting of 'Mowgli's Song against People' bars 50-56, followed by 'Soldier, soldier' bars 1-37. The bifolium was excised (bef. 1942?) from the MS. now Grainger Museum MG 3/100-8-1 which consists of pp. 1-2 and 5-6 of the harmonium part of four Kipling settings, perhaps prepared for the Amsterdam rehearsals, 1922 (Dreyfus 1980, p.28). Bars 29-30 in the present MS. differ from the version published in 1925. ff. 10-10b.
2. ff. 11-15b. 'The Ballad of the Clampherdown', beg. 'It was our warship "Clampherdown"'. Composed 5 July 1899 (f. 11):- (a) Setting for voice and piano, ink sketch; 'written down Jan. 30 1901' (f. 11b). Stanzas 1 and 2 only in full, with indications for Stanzas 3, 10 and part of 16, and note at end referring to lost sketches. Followed (f. 12b) by pencil sketches for horn, violins, fagott and contrabass. ff. 11-12b;- (b) Setting for baritone, wind, two ventil horns in F and strings, ink sketch; 'started July 5 1899 was worked at in Aug 99 also probably in Sept. 99' (f. 13). Stanzas 1-2 and 9-14 only. Autograph page numbers and headings in red ink. ff. 13-15b.
3. ff. 16-18b. 'The Ballad of the Bolivar', beg. 'Seven Men from all the World'. For male chorus and orchestra with banjos. Composed 1899-1901. Sketches of chorus parts (opening and ending only), comprising nine bars for first and eight for second chorus; dated ‘Jan. 15. 1901'
(f. 17) and 'Jan. 26. 1901' (f. 18b). Autograph page numbers and headings in red ink. Further sketches are Grainger Museum MG 3/102-6-10. (Dreyfus 1980, pp. 61-2).
