1. ff. 1-12b. 'Morning Song in the Jungle', beg. 'One moment past', from 'Letting in the Jungle' in The Second Jungle Book, 1895. For unaccompanied mixed chorus. 'Begun: 14, 6, 1905. Ended: 20, 6, 1905', 'Birthday-Greeting, Mother. 3, 7, 1905' (f. 2). Published by Schott 1912 as Kipling Setting nr. 3 (with practice piano part) and in the Jungle Book Cycle:- (a) Ink score. Copy, by [Isabel Du Cane?], from Grainger Museum MG 3/65-1 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 93); n.d. Alterations in red ink on the original at bars 41-43 are incorporated in this MS. Annotated in pencil and red ink and used as printer's copy, for 1912 edition, Schott fol. no. 15934. ff. 1-10;- (b) Piano part for practice only, to be added in smaller print to published vocal score
(f. 11); [1912]. ff. 11-12b.
2. ff. 13-16b. 'Tiger-Tiger', beg. 'What of the hunting', from The Jungle Book, 1894. Originally set for unaccompanied men's chorus; 'Begun & ended: 24, 3, 1905', 'dedicated to my mother' (f. 14). Published by Schott 1912 as Kipling Setting nr. 4 and in the Jungle Book Cycle. This MS. is the second setting 'for unaccompanied men's chorus or . . . tenor solo & men's chorus' (f. 14), but written as if for two choruses, with practice piano part; circa 1911-1912. Identical with hectograph score Grainger Museum MG 3/92-2 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 35) but annotated in red ink and pencil as printer's copy, with Schott fol. no. 15935.
3. ff. 17-23b. 'The Inuit', beg. 'The People of the Eastern Ice', from 'Quiquern' in The Second Jungle Book, 1895. For unaccompanied six-part chorus; 'composed 1902', 'Dedicated to my mother' (f. 17). Published by Schott 1912 as Kipling Setting nr. 5 and in the Jungle Book Cycle:- (a) Revised version, opening a minor third lower, in 4/8 time, with practice piano part. Ink score; aft. 1907. See Library of Congress MS. Printer's copy for 1912 edition, annotated in pencil, with Schott plate no. 18786. See Dreyfus 1980, p. 82. ff. 17-20b;- (b) Original version for voices only. Ink score; signed and dated 'May. 17-19 1902' (f. 23b). With note on wrapper (f. 21) 'see resketches in tour-sketchbook in E.D. wrapper'. ff. 21-23b.
4. ff. 24-24b. 'The Peora Hunt', beg. 'Pit where the buffalo cooled his hide', from 'Cupid's Arrows' in Plain Tales from the Hills, 1888. Composed for unaccompanied six-part male chorus, July 1901. Chorus and piano score, published by Schott 1924 as Kipling Setting nr. 14 and in the Jungle Book Cycle. '2nd version' (f. 24) for five-part mixed chorus. Revised ink draft, with optional 'blownstrings' accompaniment for opening and bars 9-10 sketched in pencil, and alternatives for the last three bars; dated '8-11.3.06' (f. 24). See fair copy, partly in the hand of Rose Grainger, Grainger Museum MG 3/70-1 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 65).
5. ff. 25-26. 'The Fall of the Stone', beg. 'By the hoof of the wild goat up-tossed', from 'To be filed for reference' in Plain Tales from the Hills, 1888. Composed for male chorus and orchestral accom-paniment, July 1901-Dec. 1904, revised 1923. Published in vocal and piano score by Schott 1924 as Kipling Setting nr. 16 and in the Jungle Book Cycle. Vocal and piano score in ink, annotated in red and blue; [1923?]. See Dreyfus 1980, p. 69, and Grainger Museum MG 3/100-1-1, a slightly later reworking, '20-22 Jan.' [1924].
6. ff. 27b-34. 'The Only Son', beg. 'The Only Son lay down again', from Many Inventions, 1893. Composed for soprano or tenor solo and chamber ensemble (8-23 instruments), with optional chorus and additional instrumentation; July 1945-Feb. 1947, scored Mar. 1947, [revised?] 1952. Published (vocal score – high key version) by Schott 1958 as Kipling Setting nr. 21 and in the Jungle Book Cycle. See Dreyfus 1980, pp. 110-12. In order of composition, the sections described below should be read e, b, d, a, c (Dreyfus 1980, pp. 109-110):- (a) First full draft of complete setting, compiled by writing out consecutively sketches dated July and Sept. 1945 and Feb. 1947. See below ff. 29b-30 and 33, 35. In ink on two staves. ff. 27b-28b;-
(b) Sketches on two staves, possibly expanded from f. 34 below; dated ‘July 15, 1945' and 'Sept. 18, 1945'. Photocopy of original in New York and White Plains Sketchbook, now in the Grainger Museum (Dreyfus 1980, p. 109, and author's note). ff. 29b-30;-
(c) 'Low Key version' for soprano and baritone or tenor and 'Room-music' (reduced to two-stave accompaniment).
