PERCY GRAINGER MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. X (ff. 29).
1. ff. 1-15b. 'We have fed our sea for a thousand years', from 'The Song of the Dead' in 'Song of the English' in The Seven Seas, 1896. Originally for boys' and men's chorus, horns, bass fiddles and double basses; 'begun: San Remo, about 24, 2, 1900 ended: London 1, 7, 1904 re-scored summer, 1911', 'dedicated to my mother', 'Birthday gift, mother, 3, 7, 1904' (f. 6). Full score published by Schott 1911 as Kipling Setting nr. 2:- (a) Rescored setting for mixed chorus (including boys or women), brass and strings (additions to forces of previous setting). Ink full score; 1911. Chorus parts are copies (by Isabel Du Cane?). Engraver's copy, amended with pastedowns and annotated in red and green, with Schott fol. no. 15939. Enclosing 'for words only' (ff. 2-5b) lithographed vocal and choral score with practice piano part, [privately lithographed by William Gair Rathbone; 1904-1911?]. See Dreyfus 1980, pp. 55-6. ff. 1-14;-
(b) Three ink sketches:- (i) First verse for SATB and bass accompaniment; 'score from old sketches March 29 1901';- (ii) Part of second verse on two staves 'inacurately [sic] remembered', 'thought of late in 1900', 'written from mem. March 29 1901';- (iii) Third verse for SATB with woodwind and strings; 'worked out late in 1900', 'scored March 30 1901'. The last two sketches differ from the 1904 score (Dreyfus 1980, p. 54). ff. 15-15b.
2. ff. 16-22b. 'Anchor Song', beg. 'Heh! Walk her round' from 'Many Inventions' in The Seven Seas, 1896. Composed for voice and piano, 1899, reworked 1905, 1915 and 1921. Revised version published by Schott circa 1922 as Kipling Setting nr. 6:- (a) Setting for voice and piano, verses 1, 3 and 4 with refrains; signed and dated 'Feb. 3rd 99' (f. 16) and 'Feb. 7th 1899' (f. 18b). In ink. A fair copy is Grainger Museum MG 3/102-9-7 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 43). ff. 16-18b;-
(b) Reworked version for baritone, male chorus and piano, one tone lower than the preceding. Ink score (for chorus) with sketched additions (baritone and piano parts and words) in pencil. Lacking composition and reworking dates, but dedicated 'Birthday Gift to Mother, July 3, 1915, N.Y.' (f. 19). ff. 19-22b.
3. ff. 23-24b. 'The Running of Shindand', beg. 'There's a convict more' from Life's Handicap, 1891 (also in 'The Lost Legion' in Many Inventions, 1893). Composed for five-part men's chorus unaccompanied; 'composed Aug.4.1901. rescored 8.9.04' (f. 23). Published (six voices with practice piano part) by Schott 1922 as Kipling Setting nr. 9. The present MS. is the version for six-part men's chorus and two double basses. Ink score; [1904?]. An alteration to the top voice part on f. 24 is dated 'Feb 15 1922'. See Dreyfus 1980, pp. 72-3.
4. ff. 25-25b. 'The Men of the Sea', beg. 'Ye that bore us' from The Light that Failed, 1890. For voice and piano. Composed Nov. 1899. Published by Schott 1923 as Kipling Setting nr. 10. Ink score; dated ‘Nov.14.1899' at end (f. 25). A fair copy made by Isabel Du Cane in 1922 is Grainger Museum MG 3/100-4 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 51). Followed (f. 25b) by an unidentified nine-bar sketch in pencil.
5. ff. 26, 27. 'Northern Ballad', beg. 'There were three friends' from The Light that Failed, 1890. For voice and piano. Composed 'May 24th 1898' (f. 26). Ink score, worked out from the draft in Grainger Museum MG 3/102-6-7:3 (Dreyfus 1980, p. 23); dated ‘July 1st 1899' at end (ff. 26-27). On the second leaf of a bifolium with the preceding and following works, the last two bars altered on a pastedown in a different ink (f. 27).
6. f. 26b. 'Ride with an idle whip' ('Life's Handicap'), from 'The Conversion of Aurelian McGoggin' in Plain Tales from the Hills, 1888. Ink score for voice and piano on last page of bifolium; dated ‘August 3rd 99' at end.
7. ff. 28-29b. 'The Sea-wife', beg. 'There dwells a wife' from The Seven Seas, 1896. Composed Nov. 1898 (voice and piano), revised 1905 (mixed chorus and brass band), afterwards adapted for brass and/or strings or piano, final score 1956. Published (vocal score) by Schott 1948 as Kipling Setting nr. 22, and (parts for strings and brass) 1950. Sketch score in ink for brass with optional instrumentation in green and cues in red ink; 'Oct 16, 1947' at foot of each page, 'WP' (f. 28), 'midnight' (f. 29b). See Dreyfus 1980, p. 30.
