1. ff. 1-21. 'Country Gardens'; 'based on sketches for a room-music settting dating from about 1908' (f. 6b). Original setting for piano 'written as a birthday-gift for my beloved mother (for July 3, 1918)'
(f. 6b). Published (piano solo) by Schott/Schirmer 1919 as BFMS no. 22:- (a) Piano solo, easy version. Ink MS.; dated 'Chicago Musical College, July 12-16, 1930' (f. 7b). Mostly fair copy, the draft notes on f. 6b being rewritten on ff. 2-5. Printer's copy for 1930 Schirmer edition with fol. no. 35785. See also Add. MS. 50823 (piano solo arrangement, 1918). ff. 1-7b;- (b) Piano solo for two hands, especially easy version. Ink MS., amended with pastedown (f. 9); dated at end 'White Plains Aug 29, Sept 1, 1932'. ff. 8-9;- (c) Orchestral version. Compressed score in ink and pencil; dated 'Jan 22, 1950' on each page and 'White Plains' (f. 10). ff. 10-11b;- (d) Orchestral version, 1950 setting. Conductor's score in black and red ink, 'made up from band and other parts'; dated at foot of each page from 'May 15,'53' (f. 14) to 'May 20, 1953' (f. 18b). Printer's copy for Schirmer edition, BFMS no. 20 (Dreyfus 1978, p. 194). ff. 12-18b;- (e) Two sets of pencil sketches; 'Nov 3 1949', n.d. The first consists of nine bars on the back of a printed programme for a concert performance by Grainger at East Texas Baptist College, 3 Nov. 1949. The second is a page of sketches for the orchestral setting of 'Country Gardens' (Balough 1975, p. 150). ff. 20b, 21.

'Setting sketched about 1907, in England', 'Written down, May 13, 1920, Youngstown, Ohio, U.S.A.' 'Loving birthday gift to mother for July 3rd, 1920' (f. 23). Published by Schirmer/Schott 1921 as BFMS no. 24:- (a) Ink score with voice and piano parts in different inks; 'May 13, 1920'. 3. ff. 29-49. 'Green Bushes'. Passacaglia on an English folk-song, collected in Somerset by Cecil J. Sharp. Composed for small orchestra; 1905-1906, rescored 1921 (Balough 1975, p. 66). Published (two pianos, six hands) by Schott 1923 as BFMS no. 25, (full score and parts) by B. Schotts Söhne, Mainz, 1931 as BFMS no. 12:-
(a) Preliminaries and progamme notes; 1920, 1921. Partly draft, partly typewritten. ff. 29-38;- (b) Version for two pianos (six hands). First piano part (first pianist), in pencil with orchestral instrumentation indicated in ink, annotated in blue and red; 'Copyright 1921' (f. 39).
