(2) Psalmody preface, now treating only of sharps, flats and the beating of time. Mostly shorthand. Imperfect by the loss of one or more folios at the beginning. ff. 3-3b;- (3) Old Version metrical psalms, anthems, hymns, etc. Partly shorthand. Mostly for four voices in open score. The psalms are partly extracts and set to named tunes. The anthems include:- (a) Two for the Blandford fire of 4 June 1731, the second, by William Knapp, first published with the Restoration anthem (following) in A Sett of New Psalm-Tunes and Anthems, 1738. ff. 15b, 19b-21;- (b) One for the anniversary of the Restoration of Charles II, 29 May 1660. ff. 48b-51b;- (c) One for Admiral Vernon's victory at Porto Bello, Nov. 1739. ff. 79b-80. ff. 4-96;- (4) Psalms 16, 118, 102, and 77. Extracts. Words only, from N. Tate and N. Brady's New Version, 1696. ff. 97-97b, ii. Ownership stamp of Hymns Ancient and Modern.
Paper; ff. iii+97. 1742-1758. 105 x 210mm. Flourishes, grotesques, etc., in red and black ink, and rhyming couplets at the heads of many pages. Ff. 1-2b are stitched in on a folded leaf. Amongst the drawings on f. 96b is one of Hannah Snell whose exploits in male disguise were revealed in The Female Soldier, 1750. Brown calf binding, crudely rebacked, with the blind-tooled border.
