CHURCH HOUSE MANUSCRIPTS. Vol. VIII. 'Chants for every Day in the Month [with other material] as sung at Lichfield Cathedral' (f. iib); collected by 'The Revd Tho[ma]s Helmore [(b. 1811, d. 1890), Priest-Vicar of Lichfield Cathedral,] March 6 1841' (f. iib)-'13 May 1879' (f. 42b), n.d. Partly Latin. Autograph. Few chants are attributed. Some may be by Helmore himself. For his career, see B. Rainbow, The Choral Revival in the Anglican Church, 1970, pp. 58-73. Chants for morning and evening prayer, mostly double, are entered in two separate, but incomplete, sequences of thirty-one days (ff. 1-22, 25b-32b). Those published by 'Marshall' [i.e.
A. Bennett and W. Marshall, Cathedral Chants, 1st ed. 1829?], are not written out, but references to the edition are made at the head of the page allocated to the preceding or following service. Amongst the other contents are:- (a) Responses. ff. 23b-25, 34b-38;- (b) Part of a litany. ff. 33b-34, 39b-40;- (c) Thomas Morley's Burial Service. Partly printed. For four voices in open score. ff. 46b-58b.
