TOWNSHEND PAPERS (3rd ser.). Vol. I.
(1) 'The Boke off Certeyn Bargeyns Tempore domine Alianore Touneshend vidue': memorandum-book containing records of sales, purchases, leases and other business matters. Lady Townshend was widow of Sir Roger Townshend, Justice of the Common Pleas and founder of the family, who died 9 Nov. 1493 (f. 5). The entries are concerned in many cases with his transactions, and range from 28 Feb. 1487 to 27 Oct. 1499. Followed (ff. 50-54) by seven vellum fragments taken from the binding. Two of these are from an entry-book of legal cases in co. Norf., temp. Hen. VIII (Hilary Term of 33 Hen. VIII is mentioned). Part of lot 92 at the Townshend sale. ff. 1-49.
(2) Court-book of the manors of Sir Roger Townshend (d. 1551), son of the above, including the Raynhams, Pattesley, Oxwick, Scarning (Skernyng) Hall, Helhoughton, South Creake (Creyk), Stanhoe, Stibbard, Ryburgh and others, all in co. (3) Leaves, numbered xlvi-lv, from a terrier of lands in Rudham, co. Norf.; temp. Hen. VIII. Latin. Signed H. Cantrell. ff. 128-137b.
(4) Terrier of lands in Akenham, Claydon, Hemingston, etc., co. Suff.; temp. Hen. VIII, with additions as late as 7 Eliz. [1564-1565]. These manors passed from the Townshend family in 1586 (see W. A. Copinger, The Manors of Suffolk, ii, 1908, p. 229). ff. 138-157.
(5) 'A Surveigh off the Manor, or Lordeshippe off Akenham', co. Suff., by Radulph (Ralph) Agas; 20 Jan. 1575/6. The manor was then in possession of Roger Townshend [knt. 1588], who succeeded in 1551 his great-grandfather, Sir Roger. ff. 158-159b. Paper and vellum; ff. 159. Folio. XV - XVI centt.
