ELLIS PAPERS. Vol. II.
(1) Papers chiefly relating to Sir H. Ellis's edition of Izaak Walton's Compleat Angler, published in 1815 by S. Bagster; circ. 1770-circ. 1855. They include some biographical and bibliographical notes on Walton, Charles Cotton, John Hales and John Dennys. There are a few printed papers, including (ff. 53-56) off-prints of Fly Leaves, nos. vi and xi, from the Gentleman's Magazine of Dec. 1822 and May 1823, signed 'Eu. Hood' [i.e. Joseph Haslewood; cf. Add. MS. 38728, ff. 7-15]. ff. 1-73.
(2) Letters to the Rev. John Brand, editor of Observations on Popular Antiquities, mostly from Robert Studley Vidal, of Cornborough, co. Devon, communicating information on local customs which, however, was apparently not used either by Sir H.Ellis when editing Brand's collections (1813) or by W. C. Hazlitt in his revised edition (1870); 28 Aug. 1786-7 May 1847. Drafts of Brand's replies are included. A letter from S. Pegge the younger (f. 74) is noticed in Ellis's edition, i, pp. 447-8, note k. ff. 74-104. Paper; ff. 104. Folio.
