ELLIS PAPERS. Vol. IV. Letters and journal of John Bidwell, a clerk in the Foreign Office (d. 1853; biographical notice, taken from Foreign Office List, 1854, p. 63, on f. 7), while attached to the mission of Robert Adair in 1808-9 to negotiate peace with Turkey. Lithographed portraits of Bidwell and his wife are on ff. 1, 5, and a number of sketches made by him during the journey, with views and maps of various places in the neighbourhood of the Dardanelles, are interspersed throughout the volume. On ff. 41-47 are water-colour paintings of typical figures at Constantinople, entitled 'Sultan', 'Shilistà Agà', 'Bostangi', 'Sultana', 'Greek', and two unnamed. The letters run from 4 Nov. 1808 to 22 Feb. 1810, the journal from 28 June 1808 to [17 Jan.] 1809, after which comes a short description of Constantinople (undated). At the end is a collection of miscellaneous autographs, some of them letters to Bidwell. The names of the writers are given in the Index. Paper; ff. 201. Large folio. XIX cent.
