(b) Extract from Samuel Johnson's 'Debates in the Senate of Lilliput', printed in The Gentleman's Magazine, xi (Nov. 1741), pp. 568-570, relating to an altercation in the House of Commons between Sir Robert Walpole and William Pitt, the elder, in March 1741. ff. 5-6b;-(c) Memoranda, by Samuel Martin, junior, of proceedings in the House of Commons, 14 Nov.- 4 Dec. 1754. ff. 14-28b;-(d) 'Deliberate thoughts on the system of our late treaties with Hesse Cassell & Russia': a pamphlet written by Samuel Martin, junior, on the treaties respectively of 18 June 1755 and 30 Sept. 1755. lt was printed in 1756 under the same title, with the addition of the words 'in Regard to Hanover'. The MS. is a copy with corrections in Martin's hand. ff. 29-98;-(e) Memoranda upon affairs, in 1755 and 1756, leading up to the Seven Years' War, written in the hand of Samuel Martin, junior, but probably collected by him and James Oswald (1715-1769), a Lord of the Treasury, in 1762 (see f. 142 b). ff. 99-143 b ;-(f ) Papers relating to Admiral John Byng and the loss of Minorca, 1756, viz.: (1) Letter from Paul Banks, [British Consul at Carthagena] to [Lieut.-Gen. Copy. f. 146; (3) Abstract from the journal of Admiral John Byng, 17 Mar.-21 May 1756, omitting entries between 6 Apr. and 2 May and between 8 and 16 May. These omissions also occur in Samuel Johnson's pamphlet, Some Further Particulars in relation to the case of Admiral Byng from Original Papers, etc., by a Gentleman of Oxford, 1756, whose wording somewhat resembles this abstract. ff. 148-163; (4) Despatch from [Admiral] J[ohn] B[yng] to the Hon. I766. between [John Stuart] Lord Bute on one side, & [John Russell, 4th] D[uke] of Bedford & Mr [George] Grenville on ye other. extracted from a paper, drawn up by Ld Bute. (Drawer DD.)'; cf. Lord John Russell, Correspondence of John, Fourth Duke of Bedford, iii, pp. 328, 329, and W. J. Smith, The Grenville Papers, iii, pp. 361-367 (quoting Add. MS. 42083). An autograph extract, by Samuel Martin, junior, from a paper which survives among the Bute MSS. at Cardiff Castle, part being in the hand of the Earl of Bute himself and part in that of James Stuart Mackenzie. The account of the meeting is identical, in all except trivial respects, with the Bute MS. Followed (ff.211-217) by at typewritten transcript. ff.206-210;-
