ROLL, headed 'Nomina militum', containing,in four columns on the recto and two columns on the verso, a list of knights, arranged (with one exception noted below) in groups, usually numbering 25 or 26. The preponderance of Flemings and Brabantines, some of whom are recorded to have received payment from King John as 'milites Flandrie' in the Mise and Prestita Rolls (T. D. Hardy, Rotuli de Liberate ac de Misis et Praestitis, 1844, pp. 109-253; Cole, Documents illustrative of English History, 1844, pp. 231- 276), suggests that the roll contains a list of knights of the Low Countries in the pay of the English King. In the fourteenth group are ten names only, headed by Henricus de Rues, followed by the statement 'Cum. Waltero Le Buk. xlij. Henr. de Rues. Summa x. cum. W. Buk'-a reference to the Brabantine adventurer Walter le Buc who in 1213 brought to England four knights and thirty-five serjeants (Cole, op. cit., pp. 263, 266). A third column on the verso of the roll, containing forty-seven names, is headed 'Nomina Militum qui sunt de hospitio Domini Regis'. It includes the entry 'Henricus filius Domini Regis', i.e. the future Henry III (born 1207). Vellum roll; 19 3/8 in. x 8 in. [A.D. 1207-1216.]
