Q. Seven vellum muster-rolls of English garrisons in France, belonging to two periods, viz.:-(1) Three musters in Latin, taken at Castrum Novum [Neufchâtel-en-Bray al. Châteauneuf de Lincourt, dépt. Seine-Inférieure] by authority of Richard Wydeuill, Seneschal of Normandy, of men under the command respectively of Richard Beverley, Thomas Ward, and William Wellesley, 20 Aug. 1363. ff. 250, 252, 254;-(2) Four musters, all indented save the last, of the men respectively under Sir John Salvain, Bailli of Rouen, 29 May 1425; Richard Guethin, Captain of Exmes [dépt. Orne], 29 July 1425; Sir William Oldhalle, Captain of Essay [dépt. Ornel, 18 Nov. 1425, 19 Mar. 1425[6]. The third is in Latin, the rest in French. Counterparts of these last four rolls are preserved in the Archives Nationales, Paris (Monuments Historiques-Cartons des Rois K. 62, nos. 18/4,/9,/18,/26); cf. J. Tardif, Monuments Hist., 1866, p. 444 and transcripts in Add. MS. 21156, ff. 36, 37, 41, 45. The majority of the documents bear a previous numeration in red, while on one of the lists of names, in a French 19th century hand, which accompany them is the pencilled note 'No. 573 de la vente.
