MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS, viz.:-
(1) 'The Royall Slaue / A Tragicomedy / The Scene Sardes / Acted before the King at Oxford', [30 Aug. 1636], [by William Cartwright]. Of earlier date than the printed edition of 1639, and wanting the Prologue and Epilogue dedicated to the University of Oxford, the later Prologue and Epilogue written for the Hampton Court performance before the King and Queen, and the opening portion of Act 5, scene vii. It has been suggested by W. W. Greg, Dramatic Documents from Elizabethan Playhouses, pp. 363-364, that this was a presentation copy for Charles I. Another MS. is at Woburn. ff. 1-24.
(2) Tracts concerning the war with Spain, 1625-1626; 1626, viz.:-
(a) 'A Discourse of the Miscarriages of o two late Expedicions [to Spain], and the Cares propounded for the future'. ff. 26-29;-(b) Proposals for the interception of the Spanish and Portuguese merchantmen, and for land attacks against Spain. ff. 29 b-35 b. The name 'Cap: Buttler' occurs on f. 25. This is presumably Capt. Nathaniel Butler al. Boteler (Dict. Nat. Biogr., v, p. 442), Governor of the Bermudas, who took part in the expeditions to Cadiz and the Island of Rhé, and who is doubtless the author of all these tracts. One of the proposals-a project for the use of the Bahamas as a base for such an attack (f. 29 b)-appears to be another version of the tract, apparently autograph, in Oxford, Bodleian MS. Tanner 73, f. 518, which is signed 'Nath: Butler'.
(3) Petition of the maire and jurats of Bordeaux to the French King against the imposition of new 'daces' and dues at Blaye [dépt. Gironde], [? 1626: cf. Duval and Courteault, Inventaire Sommaire des Registres de la Jurade, vol. iv (Archives Municipales de Bordeaux, ix, 1909, p. 447)]. French. ff. 36-41b.
(4) 'Discorso del Flusso, e Riflusso del Mare', [by Galileo Galileil, dedicated to Cardinal [Alessandro] Orsini; Rome, 8 Jan. 1616. Another copy is Sloane MS. 3193. Printed in Le Opere di Galileo Galilei (Edizione Nazionale, 1895), v, pp. 377-395. Italian. ff. 42-55. Paper; ff. ii + 55. Folio. XVII cent. Binding of boards covered with calf, stamped with the book-stamp of the 9th Earl of Northumberland. Hist. MSS. Comm., 6th Report, App., p. 307, no. 69; Leconfield sale-cat., lot 28.
