The manuscript is mentioned in two letters from Mozart to his father, 4 Jan., 12 Mar. 1783 (E. Anderson, The Letters of Mozart and his family, iii, 1938, nos. 477, 483; certified extracts from the former in Add. MS. 41628, f. 201), and is said to be the collection of music referred to in a letter of Mozart's father, 15 Oct. 1777 (ibid., ii, p. 469: Köchel, Chronologischthematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke W. A. Mozarts, 3rd ed., 1937, p. 841), but this last identification is not established (see E. H. Müller von Asow, Briefe W. A. Mozarts, i, I942, p. 250).

A slip of paper pasted over the cover (f. i) bears the title, in an unidentified hand, 'Kirchenmusiken von verschiedenen Meistern', and the number 162/33; also a pencil note, probably by Tobias Haslinger, 'Mozarts Handschrift'.
