HAMILTON AND GREVILLE PAPERS. Vol. IX (ff. 89). Letters and papers rel. to Dover and the Cinque Ports (cf. Add. MS. 40717, art. i, where the descent of these papers is explained); 16th cent.-1759. The most noteworthy are:-(1) Letters and papers, mainly copies, rel. to Dover harbour; 1 Apr. 1609-22 Jan. 1734. Included (ff. 24-29) is a copy of A Discourse of Sea Ports, an abridgement made in 1696 by Sir Henry Shere al. Sheers of a tract attributed by him (f. 29b) to Sir W. Raleigh or Sir Dudley Digges, though actually the work of Thomas Digges; this is followed (ff. 29b-34) by a narrative, by Shere himself, of his attempts to interest Charles II in the repair of Dover harbour. Both abridgement and narrative are also found in Sloane MS. 3828, ff. 181-188b, and were printed by Shere in 1701. The present MS. contains certain cancelled passages which are not found either in Sloane MS. 3828 or in the printed edition. For the full text of Digges's tract see Archaeologia, xi, 1794, pp. 212-254. Included also are papers of Capt. J[ohn] Perry rel. to various constructions in the harbour, 1724. On Perry's work at Dover see Archaeologia, lxxii, 1922, pp. 212-213. ff. 1-60b;-(2) A custumal of Folkestone, co. Kent, 16th cent., with title 'Thease byn the vsages lawes ffranchesyes that the barrons off ffolkestone clayme & vse to holde'. For similar documents see Mary Bateson, Borough Customs (Selden Society Publications 18), i, pp. xviii-lvi and, for custumals of other Cinque Ports towns, K. M. E. Murray, Constitutional History of the Cinque Ports, 1935, pp. 251-26o. ff. 61-66.- (3) Contemporary copy of Letters Patent from Charles [Howard], 2nd Baron Howard of Effingham, Lord High Admiral, granting the appointment of Vice-Admiral of Kent to William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports; 4 Aug. 1585.
