- Title:
- Syriac codex
- Scope & Content:
-
A codex of various religious texts in Syriac, the contents of which are as follows:
ff. 2v-3r : A listing of lessons formed of various passages contained within the codex, with each reading contained within a red circle arranged in a 5x3 matrix on a background of green bars and red dots (f. 2v); or inside a mock architectural sketch of a cathedral (?) façade in red, green and yellow inks (f. 3r) ;
ff. 3v-4v : A table of contents for the following First Book of Samuel;
ff. 5r-90r : The first book of Samuel, entitled ܟܬܒܐ ܩܕܡܝܐ ܕܡܠܟܘܬܐ, which is divided into 15 chapters or ܩܦܠܐܐ. This section contains a colophon on f. 90r, which states that this book was copied as correctly as possible from Syriac and Greek sources by the Pious Bishop Yaᶜqúb of Edessa in the year 1016 AG (705 CE) in the Monastery of Tell ᶜādā;
ff. 90v-91r : A table of contents for the second Book of Samuel ;
ff. 91v-166v : The second Book of Samuel, ܟܬܒܐ ܕܬܪܝܢ ܕܡܠܟܘܬܐ, also divided into 15 chapters or ܩܦܠܐܐ. The first Book of Kings is included in this section in ff. 162r-166v.
There are numerous missing passages from the complete text of the Books of Samuel, including 1 Sam xxv.11-20, 29-39, and xxx.2-13.
The manuscript features marginalia throughout, some of it indicating the start of the lessons, which are occasionally abbreviated ܩ or ܩܪܝ, and on occasion by ܫ. Some of the marginalia is in Greek, while other pieces appear to be notes taken from the works of Severus of Antioch.
A partially imperfect note on f. 1r states that this book was begun by Lazarus and ᶜAdí in Nísan 1030 AG (719 CE). It is not clear what relationship these two individuals might have to the work, and therefore when the item might have been copied.
A Syriac inscription by a monk from Tagrít can be found on f. 1v, while f. 2r carries a Syriac request for the reader to pray on the Sinner Saraṭ, under which we find the name of Yúḥanan Ḥaṭāyā Sabírínāyā.
