POEMS [by William Austin, of Lincoln's Inn, 1587-1634], transcribed by Ralph Crane. The contents are: (1) "Certaine Divine Hyinnes, or Carolls, for Christmas-daye." f.4;-(2) "Divers most devout and zealous Meditations upon our Saviour's Passion, on Good Fridaie." f. 8;-(3) "Meditations upon the 1 and 13 verses of the 17th Chapter of Job." f. 21. Preceded (f. 2) by a dedication, in verse, to George [Calvert], Lord Baltimore, by "Raph" Crane himself. The third Hymn and the two Meditations on Job are signed "W. A." (in one case with the date 1621). Cf. Harl. MS. 3357, which contains all the poems in this MS., with others, also written by Crane (as also is Harl. 6930), the Hymns and Meditations on the Passion being there similarly assigned to "W. A., Esq." They were posthumously published among Austin's works (Devotionis Augustinianae flamma, edited by Anne Austin, 1637, pp. 52, 117, 286). Crane's preface to Harl. MS. 3357, written in 1632, refers to "there not being three such [copies of these poems] any where extant, and not one (unless surreptitiously gotten) but of my pen." Paper; ff. 32. Between 1624 (when Calvert became Lord Baltimore) and 1632 (when he died). Belonged successively to the Rev. John Brand (no. 107 among the MSS. in his sale in 1807), Richard Heber (no. 1194 in his sale-catalogue, part xi., 1836), Thomas Thorpe (no. 1310 in his catalogue of 1836), and Sir T. Phillips (no. 9532). Bound in vellum, tooled. Small Octavo.
