GIRALDUS CAMBRENSIS: the Topographia Hibernica, Expugnatio Hibernica and Itinerarium Cambriae. See the edition by Rev. J. F. Dimock (Giraldi Cambrensis Opera, Rolls Series, vols. v. and vi.).
1. "Hibernica Historia": the Topographia Hibernica. The text as far as the middle of ch. xii. of Dist. I. ("inquisitionis," f. 6 b) is that of the first edition, but the rest, from "sed quoniam uindice dignus," belongs to a later text, apparently of the second or third edition. The dedicatory preface is given, but not the "introitus," the table of chapter-headings, or the letter to the Bishop of Hereford. Rubrics in the latter part have not been inserted. There is a marked change of hand at f. 59. f. 2.
2. Expugnatio Hibernica. Incomplete, breaking off in the middle of a page with the words "in Vaticiniorum libro declarabitur" (ch. xx. of bk. i.), the next four leaves being left blank. The text is of the earliest extant edition, agreeing most nearly with the Lambeth MS., but not a copy of it. Includes the "introitus" and preface, but not the table of chapter-headings. Without title or rubrics. f. 72.
3. "Itinerarium Giraldi Kambrensis et laboriosa B[aldwini] Cantuar. archiepiscopi per Walliam legatio": the second edition of the Itinerary of Giraldus, not known to Dimock except in Harley MS.
359, a 16th cent. transcript of the present MS. It contains the preface, with dedication to St. Hugh, Bishop of Lincoln, followed by the chapter called "Descriptio Baldewini," and then the rest of the text. There is no table of chapter-headings. A few lacunae in the text have been filled in since the Harley transcript was made. f. 96. Vellum (ff. 1, 171, 172, paper); ff. 172. XIIITh cent. Initials in red and green. On the paper fly-leaves are notes of farming operations, etc., in 1586, a John Browne and the "tenauntes of Bury" being mentioned. Old press-mark (f. 2), C. xvi.; Phillipps MS. 9338. 5 X 3 1/2 in.
