Commonplace-book including, inter alia, (a) "Quare ieiunamus in die veneris." f. 1;-(b) "De baptismo." f. 2;-(c) "De beata virgine." f. 2;-(d) "De satisfactione." f. 2 b;-(e) Qualities necessary for a bishop. f. 7;-(f) "Quid est perfecte uiuere." f. 8;-(g) "Qualiter homo expendet tempus suum." f. 9;-(h) Form of general confession. f 11. With extracts from St. Augustine, Cicero, Aristotle, St. Bernhard and others. ff. 1-18.
2. "Hic est libellus de emendacione vite siue de regula viuendi, et distinguitur in xii capitula"; with colophon, "Explicit libellus Ricardi heremite de Hanipole, coritinens xii capitula, de emendaeione vite. Qui obiit anno dni. millesimo ccco xlix apud Hampole. Scriptus vi die Aprilis anno dni. millesimo ccclxxxmoliiiito." The tract De Emendatione Vitae of Richard Rolle of Hampole. Begins "Ne tardes conuerti"; and ends "ipsum eternaliter laudare, cui sit honor," etc. Printed in Speculum Spiritualium, etc., Paris, 1510, and in De Emendatione, etc., Antwerp, 1533. f. 19.
3. "Incipit tractatus qui vocatur speculum peccatoris primo a beato Bernardo compilatus." The treatise printed in the Appendix to St. Augustine's works in Migne, Patrol., xl. col. 983. Begins "Quoniam, karissime, in huius vite"; and ends "prudenter provideas" (cf. MSS. Har]. 485, Royal 6 E. iii.). f. 45.
4. Tract on Temptation. Beg. "Quia, ut ait Apostolus, sine fide"; and ends "liberabit eos dominus," etc. f. 54.
5. "Disputacio inter misericordiam et veritatem, justiciam et pacem, de redempcione generis humani." Beg. "Divina potencia fecit duo"; and ends "nomen erat Joseph," etc. Occurs also in Royal MS.

6. "Scala claustralium"; variously attributed to St. Augustine and St. Bernard (see Migne, Patrol., xl. col. 997 and clxxxiv. col. 475), but the present copy, like that in Harley MS. 485, is apparently incomplete and arranged in a different order. Beg. "Cum die quadam"; and ends "delicatus est iste sponsus et nobilis, etc." f. 73 b.
7. "Anno dni. millesimo ducentesimo septuagesimo obiit apud tunic. Christianissimus Rex Francorum Lodowicus in castris iuxta cartaginem. Et hee sunt moniciones quas idem Rex fecit Philippo filio suo et manu propria scripsit"; the abridged Latin text of the "Enseignements de S. Louis," agreeing in substance, but not verbally, with that given by Geoffrey de Beaulieu. 8. "Epistola presbiteri Johannis ad Emanuelem Regem Romanorum." Apparently imperfect at the beginning. Beg. "Cum enim nos hominem"; and ends "essemus repleti" (cf. MS. Harl. 215, f. 101, etc.). f. 83. After this article are a few more commonplaces. Three leaves at the end have been torn out. Vellum; ff. 91. Artt. 2-6 end of the XIVth cent. (see art. 2), the rest xvth cent. Formerly bound in beech boards covered with leather. Belonged to "dom. Joh. Knight, Rector de Plumstyd, Norwic. dioc. [Plumstead Parva, instituted 1517], quondam cane. divi Johannis de Chelmisford," who gave it in 1527 to R. Wolston (see f. 2). It also belonged (f. 1) [in 1576?] to Jonas Jardfylde, Vicar of Stortford, co. Hertf. [1575-1580]. Phillipps MS. 11,928. Octavo.
