GIBBON PAPERS. Vol. XIV. Miscellaneous Papers and Letters relating to Gibbon and his family or to his friend and executor Lord Sheffield. The principal contents are:-
1. Documents, accompts, etc., concerning Edw. Gibbon personally, including (a) Certificate of admission as a Freemason, 19 Dec. 1774. Partly vellum. f. 1;-(b) Accompts and agreements with Strahan and Cadell for the publication of the History, the latter dated 1 June, 1780 and 16 Aug. 1787. ff. 3-6, 10-13;-(c) Power of attorney to Lord Sheffield, 6 Sept. 1783, followed by two others (1789, 1790), with private accompts and notes of hand, the last on the backs of playing-cards. ff. 7-9, 14-25;-(d) Copy of Gibbon's will, dated Lausanne, 1 Oct. 1791. (See the original, Add. 34,715, f. 15.) f 2 6.
2. Materials relating to Gibbon, collected by Lord Sheffield, including (a) An unsigned account of his childhood and personal habits. f. 40;-(b) Account of his illness and death (derived from his valet), and medical report on the post-mortem examination. ff. 28, 42;-(c) "Contents of Mr. Gibbon's MSS. Book i."; this is a list of papers not included in the present collection. f. 46.
3. Genealogical papers relating to the Gibbon family, including a letter from Samuel Egerton Brydges [1st Bart., 1814] to Gibbon, dated 14 Aug. 1793 (f. 57), numerous pedigrees, arms, and notes. f. 48.
4. Letters, the most important of which are as follows:-(a) M. Pavillard, Gibbon's tutor, to Gibbon's father; 1753-1758. Fr. Seven letters;-(b) J. B. Holroyd [afterwards Lord Sheffield] to his relations in England during his travels; 9 May, 1763-10 Jan. 1766. Thirty-three letters;-(c) Gibbon's father to James Scott; 23, 26 Feb. 1769;-(d) G. Deyverdun to Mrs. Gibbon, 19 June, 1775, and to Lord Sheffield, 30 Sept. 1783. Fr.;-(C) Correspondence of Lord Sheffield with Mrs. Gibbon; 1782-1787. (g) Jacques Necker to Lord Sheffield; Copet, 8 Sept. 1791;-(h) [Trophime Gérard, Marquis de] Lally-Tollendal and other émigrés to Lord and Lady Sheffield; 1792-1793. Thirty-four letters. French (except one);-(i) Correspondence of Lord Sheffield with his puiblishers and others, relating to the publication of the Miscellaneous Works, 1794-1819;-(k) Dr. Samuel Parr to Lord Sheffield, concerning Gibbon's epitaph, 1797.
