NELSON PAPERS. Vol. I. Autograph letters and papers of Lord Nelson, written for the most part when on active service; 1786-1805. For his private and family correspondence, v. Add.
34,988. The letters, which are holograph copies or drafts, are addressed, among others, to Prince William Henry, Duke of Clarence [King William IV., 1830], Earl Spencer, 1st Lord of the Admiralty, and Admirals Lord Hood, William Hotham and Sir John Jervis [Earl of St. Vincent, 1797]; the papers consist of personal memoranda, drafts of official instructions, notes of occurrences, etc. Four letters (ff. 185, 190, 194, 196) are in Lady Hamilton's hand. Included are :-
1. Statement of conversations with the Duke of Clarence, commanding the Pegasus, at Dominica; Dec. 1786. f. 1.
2. List of the French line-of-battle ships in Toulon, with names of the commanders and remarks on their antecedents and political principles; August, 1793. f. 42. Journal of Nelson's proceedings, 24 Feb.-31 Mar. 1794, immediately before the siege of Bastia. [Quoted by Sir N. H. Nicolas in the Dispatches and Letters, ed. 1844-6, as Journal B, v. vol. i. p. 348, note.] f. 44.
4. Brief notes of services, 19 Aug. 1793-13 July, 1794. [Quoted, op. cit. p. 349, as Journal A, but said to begin 21 Jan. 1794.] f. 51.
5. "Transactions on Board His Majesty's ship Agamemnon and of the Fleet, as seen and known by Captain Nelson," 8-14 March, 1795, containing an account of Adm. Hotham's engagement with the French fleet, 13, 14 March. f. 54.
6. "A few remarks relative to myself in the Captain, in which my Pendant was flying on the most glorious Valentine's day, 1797" [the battle of Cape St. Vincent]; followed by a copy of a similar, but not identical, account signed by himself, Capt. Ralph Willett Miller and Capt. E[dward] Berry. ff. 116, ll9.
7. "Services performed this War by Capt. Nelson of His Majesty's ship Agamemnon," 19 Aug. 1793-14 Feb. 1797; followed by a similar account, with the addition of "particular services I have been employed upon by Admiral Lord Hood, Admiral Hotham and Sir John Jervis, the Three Commanders of the Mediterranean Fleet," to 25 July, 1797. ff, 123, 125.
8. Rear-Adm. Nelson to "The Governor or Commanding Officer at Santa Cruz," in Teneriffe, with terms; of capitulation, etc.; [20 July, 1797]. f. 141.
9. Nelson to Earl of St. Vincent, after losing his arm in the attack on Santa Cruz; Theseus, 16 Aug. 1797. " . . . A left-handed Admiral will never again be considered as useful, therefore the sooner I get to a very humble cottage the better and make room for a better man to serve the State"; Theseus, 16 Aug. 1797. [Probably the earliest letter of Nelson written with his left hand now known to exist.] f. 150.
