MEMORANDA and correspondence relating to Bach's Fugues in the preceding volume, beginning. (f. 2) with an account by Sarah H. Emett, "How I became possessed of the Bach MS." From this it appears that the MS. was purchased by her father John George Emett at the sale of the effects of Muzio Clementi (ob. 1832). He left it to his son, who parted with it to a half-sister Clarissa [Mrs. Edward] Clarke. The latter sold it to Miss S. H. Emett in 1879, retaining, however, one of the Preludes and Fugues (No. 9). This has since been acquired for the Museum, and is inserted at the end of the volume (f. 22). Nos. 4, 5 and 12, which were also missing, have not been recovered. Miss Emett bequeathed the MS. to Eliza Wesley, on the understanding that it should ultimately come to the British Museum. Included also are letters on the subject of the MS. from:-S. H. Emett to E. Wesley, [1879]. ff. 8, 11, 14;-
W. S. Rockstro to S. H. Emett, with particulars of a visit in 1842 with J. G. Emett to Mendelssohn, who pronounced the MS. to be in Bach's autograph, [1880]. ff. 16, 20, 22. Paper; ff, 25. Small Quarto.
