A. Letter of Lord John [afterwards Earl] Russell, First Lord of the Treasury, to Edward Maltby, Bishop of Durham, on the papal aggressions; Downing Street, 4 Nov. 1850. The celebrated "No Popery" letter published in The Times of 7 Nov. 1850. f. 1. Followed by:-(a) Copy of the letter of Bishop Maltby to Lord John Russell, which provoked the above; Auckland Castle, 30 Oct. [1850]. f. 7;-(b) Letter from Bishop Maltby to Mrs. Amelia Opie, with reference to the above, "I wrote the letter with the freedom of an old friend, little thinking that I should have had such an answer, if any"; [3 Dec. 1850]. f. 10.
