PRIVY COUNCIL Memoranda, 1660-1708, chiefly in the hand of Edward Southwell, Clerk to the Council, afterwards Secretary of State for Ireland. (cf. Add. MS. 34,350.) 1. "Order of Councill for solliciting for the old Portugal Debt": copy of a minute, 3 Dec. 1669, about measures to be taken to obtain the sums due from Portugal. f. 3.
2. Copies of minutes, etc., endorsed "Extracts out of the Councill Books of (sc. relating to) Treatys signed there, or brought to Councill and referr'd by them to perticular committees, from 1660 to 1679." f. 5. With a similar minute (f 12), 23 May, 1682, about the treaty with Algiers.
3. Rough notes of evidence of witnesses before the Council, (a) endorsed "Minutes at the Councill, 10 Nov. 1693," about naval business, and (b) without endorsement, about prisoners [in connection with the conspiracy of 169 5/6 ?], etc. ff. 13, 15.
4. "Order of Councill on the King of Denmarks protocol," 15 Nov. 1694: a copy of the protocol about Captain Barfood, of the Guldenlew frigate, who had refused to strike his pennant to an English vessel in the Downs, and the resolution thereon. f. 16.
5. Memorandum in the hand of Edw. Southwell of a remark of the king at the Council board about Robert Frampton, the non-juror, ex-bishop of Gloucester; dated 2 Apr. 1695, but endorsed 1696 (cf. below, art. 11). f. 20.
6. "Minutes in Col. Dongan's busness relating to my Lord Athlone's bill, Council, 31 Oct. 1695": the claims of Thomas Dongan, colonel of an Irish regiment in the French service, to the forfeited estates of his father, William Dongan, the attainted 1st Earl of Limerick, which had been granted to Godart de Ginkel, Earl of Athlone. f 21.
7. "Minutes of persons sworn in my Lady Slane's busness, Council, 31 Oct. 1695"; respecting claims for portion by Anne, wife of Christopher Fleming, Baron Slane, attainted 1691 and 1695. f. 23.
