BARLAAM AND JOSAPHAT: the Latin translation of the Greek romance attributed to John of Damascus, being a Christianised version of the legendary life of Buddha. See Catalogue of Romances, vol. ii. p. 111. The title here is "Incipit liber gestorum Barlaam et Josaphat seruorum dei ex Greco sermone edictus a Johanne Damasceno uiro sancto et erudito." The text generally is of the same character as Add. MS. 17,299, Harl. MSS. 3958, 5293. Beg. "Cum cepissent monasteria." The prayer "Conuersus ad te" which forms the last paragraph, here ends "filium tuum dominum nostrum, qui tecum uiuit et regnat in unitate spiritus sancti deus, per omnia secula seculorum. Amen." Colophon, "Christus scriptorem saluet per matris honorem. Lector dic Amen, poscens ab utrisque iuuamen." On the same folio are six hexameters on the names for sounds produced by animals, beg. "Trensat olor, clingit anser, crocitat quoque coruus." On the fly-leaf (f. 1) is a short treatise on preaching, consisting of an amplification in prose of the distich "Exponas thema, distingue, proba, rationes, Addas, conuenias, conuertas, proprietates." Vellum; ff. 136. XIIth cent. Ornamental initial (f. 2) in red, blue and green; others in red. Binding (15th cent.) of wooden boards covered with stamped pigskin as in Add. 24,077. In the back is a vellum fragment from a 12th cent. MS. Belonged ("Liber S. Petri a. in Augia," f. 1 b, and "Biblioth. Weissenav." f. 2) to the Premonstratensian Abbey of Weissenau, near Ravensburg, in Suabia. Bookplate of monastic arms (18th cent.) as in Add. 24,077 (the arms in Add. 11,877 are not the same). Sold in the Savile Sale, 1861 (lot 92), but not from the Savile collection. Phillipps MS. 20,640, also marked A. 35,111 (.sale-cat., 1897, lot 242).
