"MARIALE": a collection of sermons, miracles, hymns, and prayers relating to the Virgin, compiled in the 12th century (post 1158), and belonging to the Abbey of St. Martin of Tournai (see Sanders, Bibl. Belgica, pt. i. p. 123). At the end are a life of St. Martha and a collection of verses on various subjects.
1. Eight rhyming hexameters introductory to the collection, beg. "Nomen in hoc uelut in reliquis uis scire libellis Appella Mariale quod est de laude Marie." Followed by a hymn, "Ave virgo semper pia dei genitrix Maria." f. 1 b.
2. "Tractatus magistri Hugonis super Tota pulcra es": discourse on passages from the Song of Songs, by Hugo de S. Victors (Migne, P. L. clxxvii. col. 1209). Preface beg. "Accipe, frater carissime," and text "Verba ipsa nota sunt." f. 1 b.
3. Four sermons, viz.: (a) "Sermo uenerabilis Bede presbiteri de natiuitate b. Marie semper uirginis"; not included in Migne's collection, either among the real or spurious homilies. Beg. "Natiuitatis gloriose genitricis dei." f. 8b;-(b) "Sermo de purificatione gloriose," etc. [by Hildebert of Le Mans, printed in Migne, P. L. clxxi. col. 611]. Beg "Postquam impleti sunt (etc.). Consuetudo, fratres, hec erat." Another copy is in Royal MS.
12 F. XV. (f. 134). f. 13;-(c) "Sermo in annuntiatione," etc. Beg. "Gaudeamus in domino, fratres." f. 15;-(d) "Sermo quare in Sabbatis fit memoria b. Marie": the discourse on Saturday which occurs in many collections of miracles of the Virgin (see Cat. of Romances, vol. ii. p. 616), but omitting the tale of the miraculous image. Beg. "Sollennem memoriam sacrosancte virginis." f. 17.
4. "Descriptio qualiter Vultus Domini de Iherosolimis ad Lucanam ciuitatem sit delatus": the story of the Volto Santo in St. Martin's (the cathedral) at Lucca. How it was revealed to "Gualefridus subalpinus episcopus" at Jerusalem that a crucifix made by Nicodemus was preserved there. How it was miraculously conveyed by ship to Spezia, and there received by John, Bishop of Lucca [780-803] this agrees with the traditional date 782]. The last paragraph relates that the writer Leobinus, "hum. diaconus ven. Gualefridi subalpini episcopi" (a later Gualefridus?), when at Jerusalem with the bishop heard of the portion of the crown of thorns and other relies concealed in the crucifix. The date of the arrival at Lucca is given inconsistently (see above) al; A.D. 742, "tempore Karoli et Pipini . . . anno regni eorum secundo." The Latin text has perhaps not been printed, but Bart. Beverini apparently used it in his account of the legend (Annales Lucensis urbis, 1829, i. p. 84). It is in general agreement with two Italian poems printed sine 1. et a. (circa 1550), but these place the discovery of the inclosed relics in 1090 and call the discoverer Stephen. Beg. "Leobinus diaconus seruorum dei minimus." f. 18. Another copy is in the library at Charleville, no. 168 (see Mussafia, Studien, Heft ii. 1888, p. 49).
5. Two miracles of images of Christ, viz.: (a) an image at Constantinople, stolen by a Jew, bleeds and stains his clothes and the water of a well into which it is thrown;-(b) Another stolen image is tracked by its bleeding. The two are preceded by a preface, "Postquam ille triumphalis regis regum titulus videlicet Jhesus Nazarenus." For both stories see Cat. of Romances, ii. p. 705. The former is that found in Combefis, the latter is taken from Gregory of Tours. f. 20.
6. "Incipit prologus miraculorum s. dei genitricis semperque virginis Marie": a series of about fifty-eight miracles of the Virgin, a few of which are in verse. All will be fully described in the Catalogue of Romances, vol. iii. The first part of the collection agrees almost exactly with the Paris MS. Lat. 14,463 (formerly St. Victor 248, see Mussafia, quoted in Cat. of Romances). The latter half has also nearly all the stories in common, but the order is different. Among the recent miracles related are those of Soissons, 1128-1131 [by Hugo Farsitus, printed in Migne, P. Lat. clxxix. col. 1777], f. 60, of Arras, 1142, f. 37 b (these are both in the St. Victor MS.), and of Anchin, 1158 (in the Paris MS. 12,593, from St. Germain; see also a short version in Vincent of Beauvais, Spec. Hist. vii. 98), f. 41. There are two or three more miracles below, which may be connected with this article (see artt. 8, 9, 11). Prologue beg. "Ad omnipotentis dei laudem cum sepe recitentur." f. 21.
7. "Libellus de infantia Saluatoris": the pseudevangelium as printed by Thilo, Codex Apocryphus, tom. i. p. 340, forming the first 24 chapters of the Evangelium Pseudo-Matthaei of Tischendorf, Evangelia Apocrypha, p. 50. No introductory epistles. Beg. "Erat uir in Israel nomine Joachim." f. 80 b.
8. "Relatio miraculorum domini nostri Jhesu Christi que per imaginem ipsius facta sunt in Beritho ciuitate' v. Id. Nov.": the "libellus Athanasii, archiepiscopi Alexandrine urbis, de passione imaginis domini qualiter crucifixa est in urbe Beritho temporibus Constantini iunioris et Hyrene uxoris eius" (the last five words are erased), a spurious sermon of Athanasius, printed with other versions, Greek and Latin, in Migne's Patrol. Graeca, xxviii. col. 811 (see Cat Romances, ii. p. 702). The preface here speaks of it as read by Peter, metropolitan of Nicomedia, at a synod at Caesarea in Cappadocia, but see Migne, 1. c. f. 87.
9. "Miraculum de corpore domini nostri Jhesu Christi": of transubstantiation made visible to a priest named Plegils. Beg. "Fuit quidam presbiter religiosus ualde Plegils nomine." f. 90 b.
10. A hymn to the Virgin, beg. "Alma serena pia preelara beata Maria." f. 9 lb.
11. Two miracles of the Virgin in verse, found like those of art. 6 in the St. Victor MS., viz. (a) Deaths of rich man and poor widow. Beg. "Fuit ecclesia cuius parrochie." f. 92;-(b) Incest of mother and son. Beg. "Erat Rome vir quidam nobilis." f. 94.
12. More hymns to the Virgin, viz.: (a) "Virgo mater melliflua." f. 98;-(b) "O regina sanctitatis." f. 98 b;-(c) "O Maria mater pia fons misericordie." f. 99;-(d) " Stella maris, lumen orbis, fidei preconium." f. 99;-(e) "Ave, stella mater solis." f. 99 b;-
(f) Virgo, maris stella, lesse de stirpe puella." f. 99 b;-
(g) Maria uirgo regia sponsa regis et filia." f. 100:-(h) "Vale, uirgo regia." f. 101;-(i) "Inperatrix reginarum." See Mone, Latein. Hymnen, ii. 421. f. 101.
13. Prayers to the Virgin, some of which, as indicated in the rubrics, have been referred to above in the stories of art. 6. f. 101.
14. "Oratio bona": the hymn "Juste iudex Jhesu Christe" (see Mone, op. cit. i. 359). f. 102 b.
15. Theological verses, 60 hexameters, beg. "Quem uult indurat deus et cui uult miseretur." f. 102 b.
16. "Versus de partu beate uirginis," printed, with a few additional lines, in Migne, P. L. clxxi. 1406, among the works of Hildebert of Le Mans. Beg. "Sol cristallus aque dant qualemcuinque figuram." f. 103.
17. Theological verses, 100 hexameters, beg. "Jesse fuit radix, Dauid arbor, Virgo Maria." f. 103.
18. "Vita S. Marthe, hospite Christi": a life of which the substance is apparently taken from that by Rabanus Maurus (see Migne, P. L. cxii. col. 1431) and which seems to be the source of the short life in Legenda Aurea. Other copies are in Add. MS. 18,361, Harl. MS. 3597. Beg. "Sancte ecclesie tipum b. Martha." f. 104.
19. "Versus magistri Alani de beata dei genitrice": from the Anticlaudianus of Alanus de Insulis, lib. v. cap. ix. (Migne, P. L. ccx. col. 538). Beg. "Hec est que proprium pariendi lege pudorem." In a 13th century hand, the MS. having originally ended with art. 18, if not with art. 17. f. 111 b. The following articles are in a hand of circ. 1200.
20. "Liber de mundi philosophia": a cosmographical poem in about four hundred hexameters, divided into two books. With diagrams. Preface beg. "Mens celer armatur doctrinis philosophorum," and ends "Palluit inuentor dum cuderet ista labore Cuius habes nomen si uersum legeris olim." f 112.
21. "Versus de duodecim ventis Tranquili ph[ilosophi]": beg. "Quatuor a quadris uenti flant partibus orbis." f. 115 b.

23. "Quod femina et aurum et honos subuertant mentes hominum": the elegiac poem De Tribus Inimicis, printed among the works of Marbodus, Bishop of Rennes (1096-1123), in Migne, P. L. clxxi. col. 1491, and also among the miscellaneous poems of Hildebert of Le Mans at col. 1427 of the same volume. Beg. "Plurima con [sc. cum] soleant mores euertere sacros." At the end are appended eight lines containing proverbs on the subject of women. f. 117.
24. Epigrams on some of the fathers. Beg. "Ille Origenis ego doctor uerissimus olim." f. 117 b.
