PLEAS, tempp. Edward I. and Edward II.: a compilation arranged by subjects under names of writs and assises (De noua disseisina, De brevibus de possessione, De brevibus de ingressu, De forma donacionis, etc). French and Latin. Imperfect by loss of leaves after the title De aduoeacionibus and at the end. ff. 268-291 are misplaced by the binder. Many of the pleas have dates and references to the original roll. None are later than 5 Edw. II. [1311-1312], and nearly all fall between 1300 and 1312. The compiler sometimes speaks in his own name ("Ego quesiui," or the like) and quotes opinions of various persons, e.g. Ric. de Alburn, - Wallingford (f. 35 b), "Robert Sturrey me dist que il ly auoit debat entre Sire W. de Leyborne et Sire Robert de Burgeisse" (f. 35 b), - Lancastre, - Hautebere (f. 57 b); and at f. 36 b is a reference to the text-book Paruum Hengham. A dictum of Ralph de Hengham is given at f. 61 b in English. In the margins are some proverbs in verse, " Wer prebet flores, flos fructum, fructus hodores Sic studium mores, mos sensum, sensus honores" and "Raro datur muto libera terra puto," f. 64; and in English, "Selde crende3 wel þe loþe and selde plede3 wel þe wroþe," f. 24 b. Vellum; ff. 292. Circ. 1312. On f. 1 b is a (15th cent.) recipe for "Aqua pro oculis," in Engl. and Latin. The name Topclyff (late 14th cent.) is in the margin of f. 174, and the name of Thomas Nowell of Preston (late 15th cent.) on f. 1 b. Other owners' names are "John Denton de London," "Thomas Denton," "Thomas Cary (?) . . . professor, medii templi" (16th-17th cent.), f. 292. Afterwards belonged to George Petre (? d. 1829, grandson of Robert Edward, 9th Baron Petre), being marked no. 1. Phillipps MS. 7086, marked also F. 34, 889 (sale-cat., 1897, lot 12). Bound in wooden boards covered with stamped leather. In the binding is a fragment of a 13th cent. MS. of Civil Law. 14 ½ X 10 inches.
