The contents are:-(1) Calendar, in French. f. 2;-(2) Lessons from the four Evangelists. f. 14;-(3) "Obsecro te" and "O intemerata." f. 19;-(4) "Stabat mater dolorosa," with versicles and prayer. f. 26 b;-(5) Hours of the Virgin; Memorials of Saints in Lauds, including Romanus [Bishop of Rouen] and Apollonia. f. 30;-(6) Hours of the Cross. f. 77;-(7) Hours of the Holy Ghost. f. 81;-(8) Penitential Psalms, with Litany. f 85;-(9) "Vigilie mortuorum." f. 100 b. Vellum; ff. 128. Late xvth cent. Executed in France. Miniatures at the beginning of each office. Illuminated borders and initials throughout, In the Calendar, each day has a separate background, blue, red, green or gold; small miniatures of the signs of the zodiac and of the occupations proper to each month. A shield of six quarterings has been inserted on f. 1 b, as follows:-1. Chadwick, of Chadwick and Healey, co. Lane.;-2. Malveysin, of Mavesyn- Ridware, co. Staff.;-3. Cawarden, of Mavesyn-Ridware;-4. Bagot, cos. Staff. and Derby;-5. Chadwick, of Mavesyn-Ridware; -6. Sacheverell, cos. Warwick and Derby. These appear to be the arms of Charles Chadwick of Mavesyn-Ridware (Sheriff of Staffordshire, 1719, ob. 1756), or of one of his descendants: see S. Shaw, Hist. of Staffordshire, vol. i., 1798, p. 18. Anotlier shield, apparently contemporaneous with the MS., is in the border on f. 7: gules, a saltire engrailed or between three ere-cents argent and in base a lion rampant sable. This is repeated several times on ff. 37 b, 38, with a fourth crescent in place of the lion; and it occurs also on f. 13b (with the further addition of a bordure engrailed az.) impaled with gules, semèe of estoiles or, three garbs of the second, the shield being between the initials T. M.
