WARDROBE BOOK of 28 Edw. 1. [1299], being the accompt of John de Drokenesford, Keeper. The corresponding comptroller's book exists, though in a less perfect state, in the library of the Society of Antiquaries, and was printed in 1787, Liber Quotidianus Contrarotulatoris Garderobæ, ed. J. Topham. The two MSS. were compared in 1881 b), H. S. Milman (Archæologia, xlviii. pp. 281-3). The comptroller's book is defective in the first section (omitted altogether in pr. ed.), which here fills ff. 2-11 b, headed "Recepta Garderobe Reis E. de anno regni sui xxviijo. tempore domini J. de Drok[enesford] Custodis. De seaccario." It also wants the final sections, "vnde r[espondetur]," "Qui non sunt," and "Prestita militum," etc., which occupy ff. 146-164 of the present MS., coming after the "Summa totalis exituum et expensarum Garderobe per istum librum de anno xxviijo. vna eum expensis hospicii Regis eiusdem anni." Various lists of jewels are included (ff. 133-141), among them (f. 140 b) being "vna petra magna super quam Reges Scocie solebant coronari," said to have been found in Edinburgh Castle. The last list (f. 141) comprises jewels "que fuerunt domine Blanchie de Hispania" [? Blanche of Castille, widow of Louis VIII. of France], including "vna corona magna . . . que assignatur ad portandum super capita Regum Anglie in exitu ecclesie et ad prandium die coronacionis eorundem." Vellum; ff. 164. Sold by Puttick and Simpson, 23 June, 1848 (sale-cat., lot 216). Afterwards Ashburnham Appendix 115 (salecat. 1899, lot 63). 13 ½ X 8 ½ in.
