REGISTER of Spalding Priory, co. Lincoln: the first of two volumes (Vol. ii. is now Harley MS. 742). Compiled in or soon after 1331, probably under the direction of Prior Walter de Halton, concerning whose election in 1318 a long series of documents is to be found on ff. 74 b-83 b; with some additions of later date (e.g. see f. 166 b). A charter at f. 71 b is dated 1397, but clearly by mistake for 1297. Many of the pieces have been printed in Dugdale's Monasticon (ed. Caley, vol. iii. pp. 215 seq.), either directly from this MS. or from transcripts made by W. Cole in 1772 (now Add. MS. 5844, ff. 73 seq.). At the beginning is a table of contents for the whole Register, headed "Kalendarium Tractatus sequentis." Of the five Parts three are in this volume (ff. 8, 87, 280; Parts iv. and v. are in Vol. ii. (Harl. 742, ff. 2, 321). After Part iii. is an Appendix, headed "De suplecione omissorum tangentium primam partem secundam et tertiam." f. 421. It is in various hands of the 14th and 15th centt., and contains, among other things:-(1) Notices of the Priors down to Clement de Hatfeld (ob. 1318). ff. 421, 428 b;-(2) Valuation of the lands and rents owned by the Priory under Prior John (1253-1274). f. 422;-(3) "Concessio Prioris Clementis pro solacio minutorum," dated 11 Kal. Jun. 1294. f 430;-(4) "Quedam ordinaciones facte tempore Clementis Prioris," chiefly touching matters of diet. f. 431;-(5) "Carta Regis . E. tercij de pauagio," granting the levy of customs for the paving of Spalding, dat. Hauering atte Boure, 8 Mar. anno vi. [1332]; followed by many other charters and writs. f 433;-(6) "Inquisicio capta . . . . apud Gosberkirk in Holland in com. Linc.," Friday in Whitsun-week, 23 Edw. I. [27 May, 1295], concerning the repair of ditches, walls, gutters and sewers in the marshes of Holland and Kesteven. f. 435 b;-
(7) "Firme domorum," "terrarum d[omi]nicalium," etc., in Sibsey [co. Line.], 1491-2. f. 443 b. On the fly-leaves at the beginning are: (1) Bull from Pope Victor [II., 1055-7] to King "Edgar" [or rather Edward the Confessor, cf. Cole's transcript, Add. 5844, f. 74], confirming the privileges of Ely convent. f. 1;-(2) Charter from Richard I. to the church of Ely, 21 Mar. anno i. [1190]. f. 1;-(3) "De inchoacione siue fundacione prioratus Spalding": a summary of its early history (printed in Dugdale, iii. p. 215.) f. 2. Vellum (a few paper slips inserted, 17th cent.); ff. 449. XIV-XVth centt. In the original binding, oak covers, rebacked. At f. 447 b is a note of the number of leaves, signed "per me Ricardum Ogle" [of Pinchbeck, Clerk to the Courts of the Abbot of Croyland in 1538, ob. 1555: see Genealogist, i. p. 321]. His grandson Sir Richard Ogle (Sheriff of Lincolnshire 1608, died in the Fleet 1627) apparently owned the MS.; at f. 1 are statements signed by him and by Sir John Denham [Baron of the Exchequer] that it was shown to him on his examination, 27 Nov. 1622. In 1659 it belonged to John Oldfeild (see note on f. 446 b, and Dugdale, iii. p. 215), and afterwards to Maurice Johnson of Spalding (see Tanner's Notitia, 1744, p. 251, and "Introduction to the minute-books of the Spalding Society," p. 14, in Bibl. Top. Brit., vol. iii., 1790). In 1772 it belonged to Mrs. Wingfeild of Stamford, who lent it to W. Cole and was advised by him as to its sale (see Add. 5844, ff. 73, 232 b, 233). On f. 1 b is a certificate that this book was shown to Samuel Wilkinson on his examination in the case of the Duchess of Buccleugh v. William Ayre, 14 Oct. 1720. Formerly Ashburnham Appendix 237 (sale-cat. 1899, lot 164). 13 1/8 X 9 in.
