"A DAY-BOOKE of some speciall passages and mercyes both personall and nationall, particular and generall, since these troubles in the kingdome began, Anno Domini 1640." A journal of the Civil War, 1642-49; by John Syms, incumbent of Sheepstor, co. Devon, 3 May 1623-14 Nov. 1643, expelled then by the royalists, appointed on 1 Aug. 1646 to Dean Prior in the same county, and afterwards. apparently, to the neighbouring parish of Buckland-in-the-Moor (see ff. 178 b, 179). On 3 Aug. 1644 Syms took refuge on board H.M.S. "Providence," where he stayed for several months (ff. 40 b-58). Copious extracts are given from the newspapers and other publications of the time. At the beginning are "A true Relation of the most remarkable passages in and at the last seidge of Plymmouth," 15 Sept.-25 Dec. 1643 (f. 2);-
"Certaine passages at and betweene the severall seidges of Plymmouth," 29 Nov. 1642-6 Oct. 1643 (f. 14);-and notes on the government after the dissolution of Parliament in Dec. 1653 (f. 17). At the end, reversing the volume, are lists of "bookes lent" and "the bookes I haue heer and the bookes I bought in London and at Plymmouth" (ff. 183, 182 b), chiefly theological, with prices noted in many cases; also entries of the writer's marriage and of the births and deaths of his children, etc., 1623-1661 (ff. 178 b, 179).
