ROTHSCHILD BEQUEST. Vol. 1. "Ordo Breuiarii secundum consuetudinem romane curie." Contents:-(1) Calendar, SS. Francis, Anthony of Padua and Bernardino in red and "duplex maius." f. 1;-(2) Temporale. f. 7;-(3) "Officium psalniiste," i.e. Psalter. f. 175;-(4) "Secunda pars breuiarij, scilicet de festiuitatibus secundum morem sancte romane ecclesie." f. 234. Colophon: "Istud breuiarium fuit inceptum placentie per me fratrein Nicolaum pignochum de bagnacauallo ordinis minorum. Completum autem fuit xxja. marcij. 1480. Tempore leticie. ." But artt. 5 and 6 are by the same hand. f. 366 b;-(5) "Commune Sanctorum." f. 367;-(6) Office of the Virgin, "in agenda mortuorum," communion and unction of the sick, commendation and burial, "officium sepulture paruulorum Christiaiiorum," followed by benedictions, exorcisms, etc., and "Forma absolutioinis abstracta do (sic) formulario domini pape." ff. 395 b-413. This is followed, in other hands, by services in honour of SS. Ambrose and Domninus, and by various prayers, including invocations of St. Sebastian and other saints pestilene, by Daniel [di Birago], and a prayer against pestilence, " quam dominus rex Ferdinandus [i.e. Ferdinand the Catholic] secum fert." ff. 413-415. Vellum; ff. 415. Written at Piacenza by the Franciscan Nicholas Pignochus of Bagnacavallo, and finished in 1480 (see above, art. 4). With fifty-three finely executed miniature-initials, and with ornamental borders on ff. 7, 175 b, 234 and 367, enclosing the Biraghi arms (gules, three bars embattled argent, slightly different from the arms usually given) with the letters Da. Bi. The name Daniel de Birago is written in full twice (f. 101 b) on scrolls about an initial D. He was commissary-general of the state of Milan under Sixtus IV. [1471-1484], and was made a senator in 1482 by Giangaleazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan; he became Archbishop of' Mitylene, and d. 1495 and was buried at Milan (Maison de Birague, p. 5, in Archives Historiques, 1856). The prayers on the last few pages are probably in his autograph. 11 5/8 X 8 ¼ in.
