Arms granted to English persons, 1478-1743, in blazon, collected, chiefly from docket-books, by John Warburton, Somerset Herald 1720-1759. The collection consists of several parts, each of which had originally a separate index (but a new index to the whole has been inserted instead), viz.:-
1. "Vincent's Old Grants": 231 entries taken from a larger collection probably made by Augustine Vincent, Windsor Herald 1624-6. They are numbered between 1 and 555, and the dates range from 1478 to 1602. Among others is the Shakespeare grant. At the end is a copy of a letter from W. Camden, Clarenceux, to [William Dethick] Garter about a grant, 2 June, 1600. f. 2.
2. "Vol. I. of Grants": 194 entries, numbered 1-434. The dates range from 16 Hen. VIII. [1524] to 1646, but the majority are grants by Sir Gilbert Dethick (Garter 1549-1584). f. 42;-
Vol. III. of Grants" (Vol. II. seems to have been torn out): chronologically arranged, 103 entries, numbered 3-347, dates 1673-1688. f. 75;-" Vol. IV. of Grants": chronological, 90 entries, 5-300, dates 1688-1699. f. 95;-"Vol. V. of Giants chronological, 107 entries, 1-452, dates 1699-1711. f. 111;-
Vol. VI. of Grants": imperfect at the beginning and after f. 140, chronological, 63 entries, 53-445, dates 1712-1720. f. 131;-"Vol. VII. of Grants": not strictly chronological, 110 entries, 4-588, dates 1720-1728. f. 143;- Vol. VIII. of Grants": not chronological, 130 entries, not numbered, dates 1720-1740. f. 163;-
"Vol. IX. of Grants": not strictly chronological, 28 entries, dates 1740-1743. f. 185. Paper; ff. 194. XVIIIth cent. Bookplates of John Warburton and of Sir William Betham, Ulster King of Arms 1820-1854, who bought the volume in Sept. 1819 from William Warburton, the author's grandson.
