3. Thomas Gainsborough, R.A.; 21 July, 1763, and n. d. In the second letter the artist affirms that "with regard to real views from Nature in this Country, he has never seen any Place that affords a subject equal to the poorest imitations of Gaspar or Claude . . . If his Lordship wishes to have anything tollerable of the name of G., the subject altogether, as well as figures, etc., must be of his own Brain." ff. 9, 1 1.
4. David Hume, chiefly with reference to the MS. Memoirs of James II. in Paris; 23 July-22 Dec. 1764. With one letter (f. 18) addressed to William Strahan, King's Printer, 6 Aug. 1772. ff. 12-19.
